The Redhawks ended the indoor season with a bang, and didn’t disappoint starting the outdoor season.

Friday and Saturday, the Seattle University track and field team kicked off the outdoor season at the Lewis and Clark Spring Break Open in Portland, Ore.

“There were a lot of great results today,” head coach Trisha Steidl said. “I was impressed with how well people prepared and were ready to compete.”

Shaddye Melu, already a 2016 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Champion, looked to extend his imprint on the year.

That weekend, he did just that.

Melu took first place in both the 200 meter and 400 meter dash with a time of 21.90 and 48.08, respectively. Both of these times are faster than his indoor season times, and Melu’s 200 meter time is a new outdoor personal record.

Many other Redhawks put their stamp on the meet, finishing in the top three in their respective events.

Alyssa Gonzales finished the 100 meter dash in second place with a time of 12.64.

Mandie Maddux finished in second place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.10, a new personal record. Maddux also set a new personal record in the javelin with a toss of 34.21 meters (112’-3”).

Alisa Poplawski finished in third place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:18.51.

In the 400 meter dash, Janzen Aguilar-Nelson finished closely behind Melu, taking third place with a time of 49.25.

Matthew Seidel finished in third place with a new personal record in the 5,000 meter run, with a time of 14:45.92.

“They took advantage of the nice weather and good competition to start the outdoor season off well,” Steidl said.

The next meet set for the team is the San Francisco Distance Carnival on April 1.
