The Western Athletic Conference has announced the women’s tennis pre-conference coaches poll as decided by the league’s six head coaches and, despite two teams being picked to finish first, the race for the league title is wide open as five of six teams were picked tied for third or higher.

“We’re really looking forward to starting WAC play,” said head coach Adam Reeb. “It’s a really competitive league and we’re excited to test ourselves against all these quality teams. We’ve been steadily getting better every day and the girls have been fantastic to work with. They’re a great group who is motivated and hungry to keep improving. We’ve been putting in the work and now it’s time to go for it in WAC play.”

Grand Canyon and NM State each earned three first place votes and 23 points, voted to tie for the league title in 2016. Seattle U, UMKC, and UTRGV each earned 13 points and are tied for third in the pre-conference poll while Chicago State was picked to finish sixth in league standings.

Sophomore Michelle Lui (Bellevue, Wash.) earned two of three WAC Female Athlete of the Month honors in the fall and was named WAC Female Athlete of the Week on Jan. 26. Senior Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) also earned weekly league honors on Mar. 1.

The Redhawks start conference play this weekend vs. UMKC and Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz. and will face Chicago State, UTRGV, and NM State in Chicago the first weekend in April. SU returns home for three final non-conference matches, hosting CSU Fullerton on Mar. 30, Whitman on Apr. 16, and Idaho on Apr. 23.
