The Seattle University softball team completed its homestand with a rain-shortened 4-2 victory over Montana State Billings Wednesday afternoon at Logan Field in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader, with the second game cancelled because of the continuing rain.
With one out in the bottom of the second inning, Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) laced a double to right-center field, and Breanna Timmons (Santa Maria, Calif.) followed with a single to center field. Molly Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) drew a walk to load the bases, and then MSUB pitcher Megan Dettling hit Megan Ottino (Torrance, Calif.) and Paige Bouska (Keizer, Ore.) with pitches, forcing in two runs. Kaylee Ree (Gresham, Ore.) drew a walk that scored Campbell with the third run of the inning.
Montana State Billings (7-13) broke through in the fourth inning, as Nicole Tiffany walked and Ryland Estrada singled. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a passed ball, and Haley Rowe sent a two-out single up the middle, scoring Tiffany. Jessica Bagnell drove in Estrada with a single to right field, but Bagnell was thrown out at second base attempting to advance on the throw into the infield.
The Redhawks scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ree drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, advanced to third on a flyout, and scored on a grounder to shortstop hit by Maddy Kristjanson (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.). At that point, the game was called by the umpires due to the rain picking up and making the field unplayable.
Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) picked up her first victory of the season, allowing four hits, two walks, and two runs, one of them unearned, in four innings of work. Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) gave up a walk and a hit in the fifth inning, but induced a groundout to keep MSUB off the scoreboard and earn her first save of the year.
Seattle University (8-12) heads to Davis, Calif., for the Aggie Invitational, where it will play Stony Brook twice as well as host UC Davis, Colgate, and Nevada over the weekend. The Redhawks do not return to Logan Field until a WAC doubleheader Friday, April 8, against Grand Canyon.
