The Seattle University athletics department is represented by 32 student-athletes among the 258 total student-athletes throughout the conference in the fall sports of cross country, soccer, and women’s volleyball to be named Academic All-Western Athletic Conference as announced Thursday by the league office.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year at their current institution, have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
The Seattle U men’s cross country team boasts eight honorees, the most of any Redhawk fall squad and the highest among WAC men’s cross country squads. The Redhawk honorees include Gus Arroyo (Portland, Ore.), Tyler Flannery (Auburn, Wash.), Nathan McLaughlin (Puyallup, Wash.), Ben Monk (Olympia, Wash.), Collin Overbay (Spokane, Wash.), Louis Rodrigues (Alameda, Calif.), Matthew Seidel (Santa Clara, Calif.), and Chay Weaver (Louisville, Colo.).
The Seattle U women’s cross country team placed six on the All-Academic list, including Taylor de Laveaga (Gilbert, Ariz.), Johanna Erickson (Edgewood, Wash.), Lindsay Frederick (Seattle, Wash.), Moira O’Connor Lenth (Seattle, Wash.), Lila Rice (Redmond, Wash.), and Elena Smith (Seattle, Wash.).
The three-time WAC regular season champion women’s soccer team finished with seven honorees: Kelly Beck (Tacoma, Wash.), Sarah Coluccio (Seattle, Wash.), Kiana Kraft (Kent, Wash.), Julia Moravec (Spokane, Wash.), Jennifer Plummer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Madeline Racine (Sammamish, Wash.), and Stephanie Spiekerman (Seattle, Wash.).
The Redhawk men’s soccer team, the WAC regular season and tournament champion who advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, placed six on the Academic All-WAC list: Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.), Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.), Sam Langston (Sammamish, Wash.), Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.), Cameron Rohani (Cartersville, Ga.), and Jeff Rose (Carmichael, Calif.).
Five members of the Seattle U volleyball team received Academic All-WAC honors: Iris Ivanis (Pozega, Croatia), Kerry Lane (Tucson, Ariz.), Matea Mamic (Split, Croatia), Martina Samadan (Split, Croatia), and Kirstin Schauble (Meadow Vista, Calif.).
As a whole, Seattle University student-athletes combined for a 3.258 grade point average during the fall 2015 quarter, with 17 individuals receiving 4.0 GPAs and 44 percent making the Dean’s List (3.5 GPA or higher).
