GAME #11: Seattle University plays three of its next four games at KeyArena, starting Sunday evening with a matchup against former conference foe San Jose State. The Redhawks look to extend their home winning streak to three games after convincing wins over Mississippi Valley State and Northwest Indian College.
THE NORTHWEST INDIAN COLLEGE GAME: Led by a double-double from Aaron Menzies, Seattle University received contributions from several players as it defeated Northwest Indian College, 98-36, Thursday night in the inaugural First Nations Classic held at the ShoWare Center in Kent. Menzies shot 9-of-14 from the field as he scored a game-high 21 points, plus he pulled down 13 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. He was one of five Redhawks, all off the bench, to score in double figures, as Zack Moore scored 17 points, Jake Spurgeon finished with 16 points, and Malik Montoya and Jadon Cohee added 10 points apiece. The Redhawks scored the first seven points of the game and opened a 24-3 lead in the first six-and-a-half minutes of the contest. After Sheridan Nodestine hit a three-pointer midway through the first half, Seattle U outscored Northwest Indian College 20-7 to go into the locker room at halftime ahead, 48-20. Seattle U opened the second half with 10 unanswered points over the first four minutes, including seven points by Menzies, before Nodestine hit another three-pointer. The Redhawks kept expanding the lead the rest of the way, as they shot 56.3 percent (40-of-71) from the field, including 9-of-21 from behind the three-point line, plus they scored 27 points off 23 Eagle turnovers.
A WIDE MARGIN: The 62-point victory over Northwest Indian College Dec. 17 is the widest margin of victory for the Redhawks during the Cameron Dollar coaching era, surpassing the 51-point win at Oregon State on Jan. 6, 2010. It is the largest margin of victory since Seattle U defeated Northwest University (then known as Northwest College), 122-51, during the 1988-89 season. It is also the biggest margin of victory for Seattle U as a Division I program, breaking the previous record of 52 points in a 107-55 win at Saint Martin’s during the 1952-53 campaign.
SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE: The Spartans come into Sunday’s game with a 4-6 overall record, but they will have a week between games. San Jose State is on a three-game losing streak with losses at Santa Clara, at Marquette, and against Montana State. The Spartans are scoring 73.8 points per game while allowing 76.8 points per contest. As a team, San Jose State is shooting 43.2 percent from the field, including 28.7 percent from behind the three-point line, and 64.1 percent from the free throw line. Frank Rogers leads the team with 15.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 1.1 blocked shots per game, plus he is shooting 56.9 percent from the field. Princeton Onwas is contributing 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, and Ryan Welage is leading the team with 16 made three-pointers as he is averaging 10.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
