Seattle University head men’s golf coach Marc Chandonnet has announced that Greg Gionfriddo (Memphis, Tenn.) and Zack Overstreet (Issaquah, Wash.) signed National Letters of Intent during the recent November signing period to attend Seattle U and join the Redhawk golf program starting in the 2016-17 academic year.
Gionfriddo is a senior at Christian Brothers High School and just finished third at the 2015 TSSAA Division 2-AA State Golf Championship, shooting rounds of 74 and 69. Two years ago, he first qualified for the TSSAA Division 2-AA State Golf Championship, shooting rounds of 71 and 79 to finish in 10th place. An honor roll student throughout his high school career, Gionfriddo posted a stroke average below par during his senior season.
“I’ve had the distinct pleasure the last few years of working in some highly acclaimed golf camps in different parts of the country. Greg is an individual we met at a camp in San Diego and immediately I knew he not only had the potential to compete at the NCAA Division I level, but his positive vibes and solid ball striking were good enough to have an impact,” Chandonnet said. “Greg has been through some tough times in life and certainly brings a resilient attitude; he is very coachable, wants to learn and is an excellent student. He will no doubt be a fabulous addition to the Seattle U community and I am looking forward to supporting Greg’s contributions.”
Overstreet qualified for the Washington 4A state championship all four years at Issaquah High School, winning the state title as a junior. This past season, he posted the lowest stroke average in KingCo and shot under par in every conference match, including shooting the lowest nine-hole score in school and conference history with a 29. A member of the National Honor Society, Overstreet was a team MVP three times as well as a First Team All-KingCo selection in both his junior and senior seasons.
“Zack is a young man who I immediately identified as a potential member of the Seattle University community back in 2012 when I first arrived here on campus. I knew right away that he had all the traits we look for in a student-athlete and he came highly recommended around the local golfing community. He knows how to win, he’s passionate about the game and his support system at home is absolutely fabulous. Zack is also a wonderful student and will no doubt have an impact at Seattle U both on and off the course of play. We’ve waited for the day we could call Zack an official member of our program for quite some time and we can confidently say now that our future looks very bright,” said Chandonnet.
The Seattle University men’s golf team finished third at the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championships and completed the recent fall schedule with a fourth place finish at the Bill Cullum Invitational in California. The Redhawks will play six regular season tournaments in the spring, highlighted by the third annual Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay April 4-5, before competing in the 2016 WAC Men’s Golf Championships April 30-May 2 at the Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Wash.
