“We have to give Air Force credit – they are very hard working and disciplined, just what you would expect from an Air Force Academy athletic team,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “They challenged on every ball and were good defensively. In the second half, we moved the ball a little better and were sharper at moving the ball quickly. Shane [Haworth] made a very important save and, if that goes in, it would’ve been an uphill climb. Shane kept us in the game and it was important to get the shutout.”
Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) built upon offensive success in Friday’s match to score what would be the game-winner in the 50th minute, bending it in from the left side off a cross from Davis Olsen (Auburn, Wash.).
Just under 20 minutes remaining in the second half, Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.) re-entered the match, providing an offensive spark with an insurance goal in the 73rd minute off a pass from Roberts.
Air Force’s Cameron Duley had one of the Falcon’s best threats late in the second half, but Redhawk keeper Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) was able to scoop up the ball prior to the shot in order to preserve the shutout.
In goal, Haworth made one save in goal, recording the team’s fifth shutout of the season. Air Force’s Rob Blair made four saves in 90 minutes of action.
After playing four of their last five within the confines of Championship Field, Seattle U hits the road next weekend at Houston Baptist on Friday, Oct. 9 and UTRGV on Sunday, Oct. 11. The Redhawks return home on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. vs. CSU Bakersfield as part of a doubleheader with the Seattle U women’s soccer team, who plays at 5 p.m.
