Seattle University junior Alexus Song (Auburn, Wash.) has been named the Western Athletic Conference Female Golfer of the Month for September after leading the Redhawks in the first two tournaments of the 2015-16 season, announced Thursday morning by the league office.
At the Cougar Cup hosted by Washington State University Sept. 21-22, Song’s first round was going well until back-to-back double bogeys left her with a 77 (+5), the same score she shot in the second round despite an eagle on the par-four 15th hole as she finished the first day in a tie for 38th place at 154 (+10). In the final round, she posted the low score of the day thank to a birdie run, earning birdies on five of six holes. She shot par on her final three holes to finish the third round at 69 (-3), moving up 21 spots into a tie for 17th place in the final standings with a three-round total of 223 (+7).
The following week, Song began the Rose City Collegiate with two birdies during her first three holes, but she slipped back after shooting 75 (+3) in the opening round. During the afternoon, she recovered from an opening double-bogey with three birdies to shoot even-par 72, finishing the first day in a tie for 13th place at 147 (+3). On her final circuit of the tournament, she posted birdies on the fourth, fifth, and 18th holes as she shot even-par 72 for the second straight round, ending the tournament in a tie for 11th place at 219 (+3).
"Alexus was one of my first recruits to Seattle U women's golf, and I've always believed in her ability to have a great impact,” Seattle U head golf coach Marc Chandonnet said. “It's been fun to watch her development as a player and a person. She has big expectations moving forward and, we are here to provide the support necessary for her to continue on the road to success."
After appearing in just five tournaments as a freshman with a scoring average of 81.25, she participated in nine tournaments last season, lowering her average to 77.68. Dating back to the Monterey Bay Invitational last March, Song has now finished in the top 20 in six consecutive tournaments, including a tie for fourth place at the 2015 WAC Women’s Golf Championships to lead the Redhawks to a second place finish in the team standings and earn Second Team All-WAC honors.
Seattle University continues its fall season in the Pacific Northwest, making the short trip east to Sammamish, Wash., for the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington at the Sahalee Country Club next Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 6-7. The Redhawks will then host the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational at the Tacoma Country Club in Lakewood, Wash., Oct. 12-13.
