Two members of the Seattle University men’s golf team shot rounds below par to land in the top ten after Sunday’s first round of the Cabo Del Sol Intercollegiate, hosted by Santa Clara University at the Cabo del Sol Ocean Course.

After opening with a bogey, Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) birdied the next two holes, but then he bogeyed the fifth and seventh holes to make the turn at one-over-par. Starting at the 12th hole, Cornett earned three birdies over a four-hole stretch to end the day at two-under-par 70, good enough for a tie for fifth place in the individual standings.

Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.) is also in a tie for fifth place with an opening round 70 (-2), but his round got off to a much faster start, as he birdied four holes on the front nine to make the turn at four under par. On the back nine, he collected three birdies and three bogeys, but a double bogey on the 17th hole hurt his cause as he ended the day.

Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) earned three birdies during the day, but he also struggled with two double bogeys and a triple bogey, shooting 78 (+6) to end up in a tie for 40th place. Ahren Young (Renton, Wash.) also had two double bogeys and a triple bogey to offset three birdies of his own, shooting 81 (+9), as did Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.), who birdied two of the final four holes to move up into a tie for 47th place.

Seattle U finished with a team score of 299 (+11), tied with Louisiana-Lafayette for seventh place in the team standings. Georgia State shot four-under-par 284 to take a two-stroke lead over UC Irvine, with Nathan Mallonee of Georgia State taking the lead in the individual standings with an opening-round 67 (-5) by two strokes over three golfers.

The second round of the Cabo Del Sol Intercollegiate is scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 5, at 7:20 a.m. local time (6:20 a.m. Pacific time). Seattle U golfers will begin teeing off from the first hole at 8:05 a.m. and continue every nine minutes until 8:41 a.m., playing with golfers from Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana-Lafayette.
