SPOKANE, Wash. – Seattle University men’s soccer (2-2-0) allowed just their second goal of the season, which would prove to make the difference as Cal Poly (2-0-1) came away with a 1-0 win to close the weekend in Spokane.

“I’m disappointed with the loss but not disappointed with the effort,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “We put in some good effort but we have to find ways to win. I thought we played very well today, but we missed quality chances.”

The Mustangs’ Kaba Alkebulan scored his first goal of the season in the 38th minute on an assist by Chase Minter from the top of the six-yard box. The Redhawks earned a corner kick and took the final two shots of the first half, but neither on target.

SU earned a corner kick early in the second half and followed with six of the next seven shots, but none on target to equalize the score.

Cal Poly narrowly outshot Seattle U, 14-13, though the Redhawks outshot the Mustangs, 7-5, in the second half. 10 different Redhawks contributed to the shot total led by Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.), Alex Roldan (Pico Rivera, Calif.), and Sam Langston (Sammamish, Wash.) with two apiece. SU earned five corner kicks to Cal Poly’s two over the match.

In goal, Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) made two saves for the Redhawks while Wade Hamilton made one save for Cal Poly.

The Redhawks travel to Santa Clara next Friday, Sept. 11 for a 7:30 pm match before returning home to host Harvard (Sept. 18), Dartmouth (Sept. 20), and crosstown rival Washington (Sept. 24).
