Seattle University women’s tennis recorded an impressive weekend at the Idaho State Invitational as they earned wins in both singles draws as well as the doubles draw.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better start to our 2015-16 season,” said head coach Adam Reeb. “Our team competed hard and achieved a great amount of success this weekend at the Idaho State Invitational. Anytime you sweep the draws at a tournament is fantastic.”
Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) won the orange singles draw with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 victory over Idaho State’s Taylor Cole while, in the same draw, Audrey Scott (Austin, Texas) finished third with a victory over Idaho State’s Nonie Alexandersen.
In the black singles draw, Michelle Lui (Bellevue, Wash.) defeated her own teammate, Kelli Woodman (Denver, Colo.), who finished second. Idaho native Madison Maloney (Idaho Falls, Idaho) finished third in the draw with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over ISU’s Kasey Bacon.
“Michelle Lui picked right back up from her WAC Freshman of the Year campaign last year by sweeping both her singles and doubles draws. She defeated partner Kelli Woodman in the finals. Kelli had a fantastic summer season and she carried that momentum into our fall season with a runner-up finish in singles and a title in doubles. Kristen James had a solid weekend and came up victorious in her singles draw and in her doubles draw with Kailyn Skjonsby.”
Woodman and Lui, as a doubles team, finished first in the doubles black draw with a trio of wins. In the orange doubles draw, James and Kailyn Skjonsby (Grapeview, Wash.) won the round robin draw.
“Overall it was a great weekend and I’m very proud of our team. We’re excited to keep this momentum going and we look forward to our home match next week. We hope to see several members of the Redhawk nation there.”
The Redhawks return to action with a home dual match on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at the Seattle U tennis courts as they host Pacific Lutheran at 5 p.m.
