“Those were two pretty goals from Sergio Rivas, and we talked about that yesterday, that balls are going to come back to the top of the box and you have to be there to get them,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “It was a great team win, our fourth shutout in six games. Shane Haworth made a fantastic save with three minutes left and, if that goes in, they’re elevated and it’s a whole different game. I’m really proud – it’s a great honor to play a team like Harvard and it’s fun.”
Rivas and Julio Rubio (Goleta, Calif.) played the ball back and forth from the top of the box before Rivas tapped the ball into the back right of the net for the game-winner in the 56th minute. Both the goal and assist marked the first of Rivas and Rubio’s careers, respectively.
In the 64th minute, Rivas volleyed a kick straight into the back of the net off a deflection for an insurance goal.
The Redhawks nearly added two more goals as David Olsen (Auburn, Wash.) hit the crossbar early in the match and Rubio hit the right post with just over 10 minutes left in the first half.
One of Harvard’s best chances came near three minutes remaining in the contest as Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) came up with a big save in goal for Seattle U.
Olsen led all players on the field with eight shots while Rivas took seven as the Redhawks outshot the Crimson, 20-7.
Haworth made three saves in goal while Evan Mendez made four for Harvard.
Seattle U remains home to host Dartmouth on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 pm and hosts nationally ranked Washington on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 pm.
