After a spring in which the Seattle University women’s golf team won the Monterey Bay Invitational and finished second at the WAC Championships, the Redhawks welcome an experienced squad back to campus to start the 2015-16 season.
All five golfers who competed for Seattle U at last April’s WAC Championships return to the Redhawk squad, including Second Team All-WAC honoree Alexus Song (Auburn, Wash.), who finished in the top 15 in the last four tournaments of the previous season, capped by a top-five finish at the WAC Championships. Dorsey Addicks (Big Sky, Mont.) followed a tie for seventh place at the conference tournament with a victory at the Montana State Amateur Championship over the summer.
Jamie Huo (Kent, Wash.) earned First Team All-WAC honors last season after leading the Redhawks with a 77.39 scoring average, including a tie for second place at the Matador Golf Invitational and a third place finish at the Monterey Bay Invitational. Amanda Beyke (Federal Way, Wash.) received Second Team All-WAC recognition thanks to three top-10 finishes over the course of the 2014-15 season. Ellen Brantberg (Stockholm, Sweden) earned medalist honors at the Monterey Bay Invitational and was named a WGCA All-American Scholar for her performance both in the classroom and on the golf course.
Juhee Lee (Wilsonville, Ore.), a senior along with Beyke, will look to break into the lineup as she wraps up her collegiate career. Seattle U head coach Marc Chandonnet also added youth to the program, as freshman Yen Ting Wong (Singapore) will look to have an impact on the team’s continued improvement.
Seattle U will spend the fall in the Pacific Northwest competing in tournaments hosted by Washington State, Portland State, and Washington. The Redhawks will also host the second annual Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational Oct. 12-13 at the Tacoma Country Club in Lakewood, Wash., welcoming defending tournament champion Washington back along with fellow Jesuit school Gonzaga and conference rivals Grand Canyon, UT Rio Grande Valley, and Utah Valley.
In the spring, the Redhawks will participate in three tournaments in Arizona and three tournaments in California. The 2016 WAC Women’s Golf Championships will take place Apr. 22-24 at the Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club in Blaine, Wash.
To support the men and women who have fought bravely and given their lives in military service, Chandonnet has enlisted the Seattle U golf program to participate in the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program. Each tournament, the number one player for Seattle U will carry a special bag embroidered with the name of Specialist Lori Ann Piestewa, a U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps soldier killed during the same Iraqi Army attack in which fellow soldiers Shoshana Johnson and Jessica Lynch sustained injuries. A member of the Hopi tribe, Piestewa was the first Native American woman in history to die in combat while serving with the U.S. military and the first woman in the U.S. armed forces killed in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Arizona's Piestewa Peak is named in her honor.
The Seattle University women’s golf team enters its fourth year as a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
