Seattle University men’s soccer (3-2-0) recorded their third shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory at Santa Clara (1-4-0) in non-conference play.

“Santa Clara is a great team so to come here and grind out a 1-0 win was terrific,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “It’s important to be able to win 1-0 and hold that lead. I’m very happy for the guys and they worked extremely hard today. It’s our third shutout and we have given up only two goals in five games, which is great for our defense. It was a complete team effort – guys came in off the bench and did a good job as well as the starters. Getting a goal from a defender and a shutout for our back line is excellent. It was an end-to-end game and wasn’t over until it was over.”

Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) took the first two shots of the contest over the first 12 minutes before the Redhawks added two more midway through the first half.

Jeff Rose (Carmichael, Calif.) had one of the Redhawks’ first best chances of the game with a shot that hit the post in the 70th minute before Kyle Bjornethun (Snohomish, Wash.) scored his first goal of the season two minutes later for the game-winner.

In a largely defensive battle, the Redhawks outshot the Broncos, 7-6, with just one shot on goal apiece for each team.

Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) recorded his 12th career shutout with one save in the complete game outing for SU. Santa Clara’s Kendall McIntosh also played all 90 minutes in goal with four saves.

After three straight games on the road, Seattle U returns home next weekend for a three-game homestand. The Redhawks host Harvard (Friday, Sept. 18), Dartmouth (Sunday, Sept. 20), and crosstown rival Washington (Thursday, Sept. 24).
