SEATTLE – Seattle University softball (14-30) scored two runs late but could not overcome No. 19 Washington (36-11) as the Huskies earned an 11-3 win in non-conference play.
"We battled hard tonight after falling behind early," said head coach Dan Powers. "I saw some real growth in our team because we could've rolled over but we chose to fight back. We had some chances to get back into the game but missed the clutch hits. We will rest up and get ready for UMKC this weekend."
Washington took a 6-0 lead through three innings, scoring two in the second on a two-RBI homer to center field from Kylee Lahners and four more in the third on a triple, double, and single, consecutively.
Narrowing their deficit in the bottom of the third, Seattle U earned back one run on a bases loaded walk before UW scored in the fourth on a Redhawk fielding error to lead 7-1.
UW tacked on four more in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Dani Braun before Kirstyn Thomas scored on a wild pitch. The Huskies would score two more on an error to lead 11-1 heading into the final half inning.
Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) scored a run on the second bases loaded walk of the game before Rose Saenz (San Gabriel, Calif.) hit an RBI single to bring Hayley Beckstrom (Maple Valley, Wash.) home. However, a UW fielding double play would end the inning and the game and strand two Redhawks on base.
In the circle, Hailey Bator picked up the win for the Huskies allowing one run on two hits while walking two and striking out one while Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) suffered the loss for Seattle U while allowing six runs on six hits while walking four in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Saenz led the Redhawks at the plate, hitting 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Redhawks head to Kansas City, Mo. for a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at UMKC this weekend. Stay tuned to GoSeattleU.com for all the latest updates on the team throughout the 2015 season.
