The Seattle University men’s golf team proved that it could compete with just about any other team on a difficult championship course, sitting in second place after two rounds of the second annual Redhawk Invitational Monday at Chambers Bay Golf Club.
Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) collected two birdies in the first round and four birdies in the second round as he posted scores of 72 (+2) and 73 (+3) to end the day in a tie for ninth place at 145 (+5). Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.) did not shoot any big scores throughout the day, moving into a tie for 12th place at 146 (+6) after rounds of 72 (+2) and 74 (+4).
Jamie Hall (Seattle, Wash.) suffered one bad hole in the first round as he shot 76 (+6), but he used three birdies to improve to a second round 71 (+1) to finish the day in a tie for 14th place at 147 (+7). Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) and Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) shot identical rounds of 72 (+2) and 77 (+7) to end up in a tie for 26th place at 149. Playing as an individual, Shane Wathanasaynee (Los Alamitos, Calif.) shot rounds of 81 (+11) and 85 (+15) to finish the day in 87th place at 166 (+26).
Seattle University posted rounds of 288 (+8) and 295 (+15) to remain in second place throughout the day, notching a combined score of 583 (+23), two strokes ahead of third place Seton Hall. Washington showed why it is one of the top teams in the country, shooting rounds of 279 (-1) and 280 (even) for a 36-hole total of 559 (-1), led by individual leader Frank Garber at 136 (-4), four strokes in front of teammates Cheng-Tsung Pan and Jonathan Sanders.
The third and final round of the Redhawk Invitational is set to begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start, with Seattle U golfers teeing off on holes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 18. Spectators are welcome to walk the course alongside the golfers for free.
