PHOENIX, Ariz. – Seattle University softball (11-24, 1-2 WAC) prevented the shutout but a significant offensive output for Grand Canyon (21-17, 2-1 WAC) in the fourth inning would prove fatal as the Lopes earned a 9-1 win and the series victory in Western Athletic Conference play.
"We had our chances early to score but hit the ball right to them," said head coach Dan Powers. "GCU is a tough team and they took advantage of our miscues today."
Bianca Boling put the Lopes ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single to right field to score Camree Wartman before two scoreless innings for either team.
Grand Canyon tacked on six in the fourth inning, all on singles, to jump to a 7-0 lead.
The Redhawks got on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI single to center field from Lisa Maulden (Maple Valley, Wash.) but GCU would advance runners to the corners and Brielle Breland would score the game-ending run on a Kayla Henry RBI single.
Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) suffered the loss in the circle, pitching three and a third innings and giving up four runs on seven hits while walking and striking out two apiece. Kailey Regester picked up the win giving up just five hits and striking out one in the three-inning outing.
Seattle U returns home for a five-game homestand, hosting Portland State in a non-conference doubleheader (Apr. 1, 3 p.m.) and New Mexico State in a three-game conference series (Apr. 3-4). Stay tuned to GoSeattleU.com for all the latest updates on the Redhawks throughout the 2015 season.
