No. 4 Redhawks to Face No. 5 Wolverines in WAC Tournament First Round: Seattle University women’s basketball is set to host Utah Valley in the first round of the WAC Tournament on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at 2 p.m. PT in Las Vegas. WAC Postseason Honors: Taelor Ross was named Second Team All-WAC after leading Seattle U in both scoring and rebounding through the regular season (11.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg). She set new career highs in scoring and rebounding during her junior campaign (21 pts on Dec. 4, 2014 vs. UW; 14 rbs on Feb. 5, 2015 at GCU) as well as in assists (4), steals (4), and blocks (6) and leads the WAC in blocked shots. Crystal Allen was named to the All-Newcomer team, shooting 82.2 percent from the free-throw line during her freshman campaign, good for second in the league through the regular season. Allen represented the Redhawks with a WAC Player of the Week honor (Jan. 5-11), recording a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds in a win over UVU.
Home Sweet Home: Seattle U women’s basketball hosted a record-high 20 home games in 2014-15. The Redhawks completed 10 of 20 (including exhibitions) prior to the Christmas holiday and at the beginning of January, the Redhawks finished a stretch in which they played 11 of 12 on their home court (Nov. 29-Jan. 10). After playing seven of eight home games during the month of December and six of eight in January, the Redhawks played on their home floor just twice in February.
Scouting Utah Valley (11-18, 5-9 WAC): In a battle for the No. 4 seed, Seattle U earned the home team designation in Wednesday’s first round contest with a win over Grand Canyon and a Utah Valley loss to Bakersfield on Saturday, Mar. 7. Prior to their loss to CSUB, the Wolverines swept the previous weekend with a 61-51 overtime win over UMKC (Feb. 26) and a 68-53 win over Chicago State (Feb. 28), both in Orem. Mariah Seals was named WAC Freshman of the Year, scoring in double digits in 10 of 14 WAC games and ranking fifth in the league in three-point field-goal percentage and three-point field goals made. Rhaiah Spooner-Knight joined the Redhawks’ Taelor Ross on the All-Conference Second Team, leading UVU in scoring through the regular season (13.3 ppg). The teams split their pair of meetings this year, each picking up a win on their home court (SU won 73-58 on Jan. 10, UVU won 73-42 on Feb. 7).
Record Breaking Performances: Renee Dillard-Brown recorded her first career double-double on Senior Day vs. Grand Canyon on Mar. 7 (10 points, 10 rebounds). Dillard-Brown’s 10 rebounds set a new career high while Jazmine Johnson also scored a career high 10 points. Kaylee Best tied her career high with nine rebounds.
