After helping the Seattle University men’s golf team to a second place finish at the Folino Invitational last week, sophomore Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) has been named the Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com.
Kukula recovered from a tough start to his first round, earning four birdies over the final five holes to post an opening-round score of 76 (+4). He collected four more birdies in each of his final two rounds, shooting even-par 72 and one-over-par 73 to finish the tournament in eighth place with a 54-hole total of 221 (+5), helping the Redhawks to their third runner-up finish of the 2014-15 season.
So far this season, Kukula has appeared in eight tournaments, earning a scoring average of 73.48, second on the team. During the year, he has shot two rounds of 68 as well as a 69 in the first round of the Arizona Intercollegiate and back-to-back rounds of 70 at the Barona Collegiate Cup.
“Ross has proven to be extremely coachable. He is a fabulous athlete, a great student and truly displays a passion for the game! We are lucky to have him and confident that he will help this team accomplish great things while at SU,” Seattle U head golf coach Marc Chandonnet said.
After a stellar fall quarter in the classroom, Kukula, a business management major within the Albers School of Business and Economics, is carrying a 3.25 grade point average.
The Seattle University men’s golf team will next compete at the Sacramento State Invitational at the Valley Hi Country Club in Sacramento, Calif., March 9-10. Seattle U will also host the Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay, home of the 2015 United States Open Championship, April 6-7.
The Seattle University athletics department names a Featured Student-Athlete each Tuesday based on performances both in the classroom and in competition.
