Seattle University took advantage of good scoring conditions in the morning, shooting a season-best round of 284 (-4) before battling in the second round, ending Monday in sixth place as play was suspended due to darkness at the Barona Collegiate Cup hosted by San Diego State University at the Barona Creek Golf Club.

Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) finished the day as the top Redhawk in the individual standings, posting back-to-back rounds of two-under-par 70 to move into a tie for eighth place at four under par (140). He collected five birdies and three bogeys in the morning round before playing a steadier afternoon round with three birdies against just one bogey.

With one hole left to play, both Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.) and Jamie Hall (Seattle, Wash.) are currently in a tie for 33rd place at three over par. Harvie shot Seattle U’s best round of the morning at three-under-par 69, earning five birdies against just two bogeys, but he struggled in the afternoon, shooting six over par heading into the 18th hole. Hall collected six birdies in the first round as he shot one-under-par 71, but he slid back in the standings after shooting four over par through 17 holes in the second round.

Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) got off to a great start with three birdies over his first five holes of the day, but two double bogeys set him back to an opening round 74 (+2), a score he duplicated in the second round to end the day in a tie for 40th place at four over par. Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) posted front-nine scores under par in each round, but he struggled on the back nine during both circuits, shooting 75 (+3) in the morning and four over par in the afternoon to end the day in a tie for 57th place at seven over par with two holes to go in his second round.

As a team, Seattle U posted a first round score of four-under-par 284 to land in sixth place, where the Redhawks currently stand at four over par thanks to an in-progress second round score of eight over par. San Diego moved into the lead at the end of play at 15 under par, two strokes ahead of San Diego State, but the Aztecs’ Nahum Mendoza III and Xander Schauffele share the individual lead at eight under par.

The completion of the second round and the start of the third and final round will begin at 7:30 a.m., with the pairings for the third round remaining the same as those for the first two rounds.
