Seattle University student-athletes continued to show excellence both in competition and in the classroom during the just-completed fall quarter, as 34 Redhawk student-athletes in cross country, soccer, and volleyball received Western Athletic Conference All-Academic honors, announced Thursday afternoon by the league office.
To be eligible for the WAC All-Academic Award, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year at the nominating institution, must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, and must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests. A total of 203 student-athletes were named to the list from the fall sports of men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball.
The Seattle U women’s cross country team, the 2014 WAC champions, enjoyed more honorees than any other women’s cross country squad in the league with 10. Seniors Meghan Arigo (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), Sophie Curatilo (Honolulu, Hawaii), Madison Davis (Camano Island, Wash.), and Haley Kruell (Portland, Ore.) were joined on the All-Academic list by juniors Taylor de Laveaga (Gilbert, Ariz.), Emily Hedberg (Phoenix, Ariz.), Rebecca Lassere (Boise, Idaho), and Elena Smith (Seattle, Wash.), and sophomores Moira O’Connor Lenth (Seattle, Wash.) and Lila Rice (Redmond, Wash.).
The Redhawk volleyball squad also led the league in its sport with seven honorees, including seniors Alec Goodrie (Springfield, Ore.) and Stephanie Stoll (Bellevue, Wash.), junior Martina Samadan (Split, Croatia), and sophomores Iris Ivanis (Pozega, Croatia), Kerry Lane (Tucson, Ariz.), Sydney Schafer (Salt Lake City, Utah), and Kirstin Schauble (Meadow Vista, Calif.).

Among the male sports, the men’s soccer team finished with six awardees: senior Chase Hanson (Kent, Wash.), juniors Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.), Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.), and Jeff Rose (Carmichael, Calif.), and sophomores Shane Mahvi (San Diego, Calif.) and Cameron Rohani (Cartersville, Ga.). Four members of the men’s cross country team collected WAC All-Academic honors, including seniors Miles Hille (Woodinville, Wash.) and Collin Overbay (Spokane, Wash.), junior Gus Arroyo (Portland, Ore.), and sophomore Louis Rodrigues (Alameda, Calif.).
Seattle U finished second among conference schools with its 34 honorees, just two behind Utah Valley’s 36 recipients. Overall, Redhawk student-athletes put together a 3.259 cumulative grade point average during the fall 2014 quarter. Of the 34 honored because of their academics, 11 earned All-WAC recognition for their efforts in competition during the fall season.
