Seattle University men’s soccer (6-4-1, 1-1-1 WAC) earned their first Western Athletic Conference win of 2014 with a trio of goals and a 3-0 shutout versus Grand Canyon (2-8-1, 0-3-0 WAC) at Championship Field.

“It’s good to get a shutout,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “Shane Haworth did extremely well in goal today and kept us in it. We also had good goals today – one by Race [Sciabica] as well as Kyle Bjornethun’s first collegiate goal and Ian Hines-Ike’s penalty kick was excellent as well. It’s a good team effort and it’s important when we’re at home to get these kinds of wins.”

Kyle Bjornethun (Snohomish, Wash.) would score his first career goal, serving as the game-winner, just eight minutes in on a header off of Nick Prasad’s (Surrey, B.C.) previous shot. The goal was the first shot of the entire match.

The Redhawks would advance their tally in the 26th minute on an unassisted goal by Race Sciabica (Bellevue, Wash.), heading into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Just before the 81 minute mark, Prasad was taken down in the box and Ian Hines-Ike (Littleton, Colo.) put away the resulting penalty kick to give the Redhawks the final 3-0 lead for his first goal of the season.

One of Grand Canyon’s best opportunities to score came in the 79th minute as Courage Chirandu put away back-to-back shots on goal and Alexander Ramirez added a third directly after, which sailed wide.

Three different Redhawks added a team-high three shots, as they outshot the Lopes, 17-15.

In goal, Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) earned the shutout with six saves while Kendyl Day and Luca Licciardi shared time in goal for Grand Canyon, tallying a total five combined saves.

The Redhawks stay home to host Utah Valley at Championship Field on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
