Scouting Grand Canyon (1-6-1): Grand Canyon and Bakersfield were set to open WAC play last weekend but inclement weather in the Phoenix area postponed the match to a later date. The Lopes lone win thus far came at home against former WAC foe, Idaho, 2-1, on Sept. 19. Maria Monterroso leads GCU offensively with five goals on the season while Blakely Fraasch and Daryl Bradley have shared time in goal. Last season, the Redhawks defeated the Lopes in both meetings including 3-1 in Seattle on Sept. 20 and 5-0 in Phoenix on Oct. 11 (the sixth game of the Redhawks’ seven game shutout streak). In 2013, head coach Stevie Gill led GCU to a fourth place league finish in their first season of Division I as well as first season in the WAC, which would have qualified the Lopes for the WAC tournament if they were not currently in the DI reclassification process.
Scouting Bakersfield (1-8-1): Bakersfield earned their lone win on Sept. 19 at Florida Atlantic, 2-1, after opening the season with a eight game winless streak. Of note, the Roadrunners faced No. 23 Long Beach State, falling 2-0 on Sept. 7, while playing Northern Iowa to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 5. Five different Runners have scored a goal apiece, led by Hedda Regefalk with 17 shots, six on goal. Tori Ornela has seen the most time in goal while Megan Vina has also made two appearances.
