The Redhawks earned a pair of corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of play, but could not convert on the scoring opportunities.
The Rainbow Wahine took three straight shots near the 22 minute mark but the ball flew every possible way as it was blocked before sailing high and wide.
At the end of the 23rd minute, Hawaii would score first on an own goal as the ball deflected off the Seattle U defense to the lower left corner.
UH ahead, 1-0, at half, they would take two early shots, both saved by Redhawk keeper Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.). The Redhawks, earning a pair of corner kicks in the 54th minute, Natasha Howe (Mission Viejo, Calif.) would take back-to-back shots just four minutes later.
However, it would be Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) who would break through to tie the tally, 1-1, in the mid-60th minute. Verdoia beat the Hawaii defense down the right side and shot the ball into the back corner of the net from inside the 18 yard box.
The Redhawks would add three more shots before the 66 minute mark before a purely defensive battle ensued as neither team recorded a shot for the next 10 minutes.
Smallidge saved two Rainbow Wahine shots with just under two minutes remaining in regulation and Isabella Guerry (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) had one of the Redhawks’ best late chances to score with a shot on goal at 89:18.
The score remaining tied at one, the match went into overtime, Seattle U’s third overtime match of the season in four games.
In the 92nd minute, Hawaii’s Krystal Pascua would put the ball in the net for the winning goal near the edge of the 18 yard box off a slot pass from her sister Kama Pascua.
In goal, Smallidge made six saves in the complete game outing while Erica Young made two saves in the complete game win.
The Rainbow Wahine led in shots, 14-9, but the Redhawks drew a greater number of corner kicks, 8-5.
Smallidge, Verdoia, Guerry, and Isabelle Butterfield (Bellevue, Wash.) were named to the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi All-Tournament Team.
