After maintaining their skills over the summer, an experienced Seattle University women’s golf team embarks upon the fall 2014 portion of their schedule, which will see the Redhawks compete in various tournaments around the Pacific Northwest over four consecutive weeks.
The Redhawks return six golfers from the 2013-14 roster, including four of the five players who competed at last spring’s Western Athletic Conference Championships, where the Redhawks finished in third place. In addition, head coach Marc Chandonnet has brought in two newcomers to improve the intrasquad competition, as everyone will be expected to prove that they belong on the travel squad as the year goes along.
The highlight of the fall schedule for Seattle University will be hosting the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational at Tacoma Country Club Oct. 13-14. Honoring the Seattle U Athletics Hall of Famer who competed with the men’s golf team in the 1950s because there was no women’s golf team for her to join, the tournament will feature some of the top teams in the region such as Washington, Washington State, Eastern Washington, Portland State, and Idaho.
Seattle U’s top two golfers at the 2014 WAC Championships continued their solid play over the summer. Dorsey Addicks (Big Sky, Mont.) finished second at both the Earl Hunt Memorial Tournament in Whitefish, Mont., and the Montana State Women’s Amateur Championship, and then she capped off the summer by qualifying for the 2014 United States Women’s Amateur Championship. Meanwhile, junior Amanda Beyke (Federal Way, Wash.) came close to joining Addicks at the U.S. Women’s Amateur, finishing eighth in the local qualifier, plus she finished in fourth place at the Washington State Women’s Amateur Championship.
Juhee Lee (Wilsonville, Ore.) and Jamie Huo (Kent, Wash.) also return to the Seattle U golf program after competing at the conference championships last season. Monica Keo (Kaneohe, Hawaii) is the only senior on the 2014-15 squad and will be looking for more playing time in her final collegiate year, while Alexus Song (Auburn, Wash.) is coming off top-eight finishes at both the WSGA Women’s Amateur in Port Ludlow, Wash., and the PNGA Women’s Amateur in Lewiston, Idaho.
The two newcomers to the Redhawk women’s golf program are sophomore transfer Ellen Brantberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and freshman Tori Hoff (Orinda, Calif.). Brantberg, coming to Seattle U from Cal State Northridge, helped her team win the Stockholm Series, plus was victorious in both the women’s and junior girls’ club championships. Hoff finished in the top 10 at three different NGCA events over the summer, including a second-place finish at El Macero Country Club, plus she shot 69 at Poppy Ridge Golf Club.
The competition season for the Seattle U women’s golf team begins Monday, Sept. 22, with the Cougar Cup, hosted by Washington State University at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash. The next week, the Redhawks head south for the Rose City Collegiate, hosted by Portland State University at Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora, Ore., and then Seattle U stays close to home, participating in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Sahalee Country Club in Redmond Oct. 7-8.
Updates will be posted after each day of competition throughout the 2014-15 golf season on GoSeattleU.com.
