Numerous Seattle University student-athletes, not only those competing in spring sports but also freshmen and first-year transfers completing their initial year of residency, received All-Academic honors from the Western Athletic Conference, announced Monday morning by the league office.
Seattle U earned 41 WAC All-Academic honors from the spring sports of baseball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, third-most among the nine permanent members of the conference. In addition, 59 Redhawk freshmen and first-year transfers competing throughout the 2013-14 academic year were added to the list after completing their first year at Seattle U, the most honors among first-year students from any WAC school.
In total, Seattle U student-athletes accumulated 181 WAC All-Academic honors during the 2013-14 season, second only to Grand Canyon’s 199 honors. The Western Athletic Conference handed out 1,187 All-Academic awards in 2013-14, including 308 to spring student-athletes and another 342 to freshmen and transfers for all sports.
The mission of the Seattle University athletics department is to champion the holistic development of student-athletes inspiring a vital and engaged campus community through the development and maintenance of a premier, nationally prominent NCAA Division I athletics program, in the spirit of the Jesuit tradition. One of the aspects of putting the mission into action is creating an athletic culture where student-athletes can realize balanced success in academics, athletics and in all their collegiate pursuits and experiences.
