The Seattle University men’s golf team maintained its sixth-place position after the second round of the 2014 Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships Saturday at Stallion Mountain Golf Club.

Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) made three birdies during his circuit, including back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes, but consecutive bogeys on 16 and 17 dropped him back into a tie for 18th place at 147 (+3) thanks to a second-round 76 (+4). Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) made a birdie on the 11th hole to move back to even par for the round, but three straight bogeys late in the round led to a 75 (+3), although he did move up into a tie for 21st place at 149 (+5).

David Torres (Armenia, Colombia) made three birdies during Saturday’s round, including one on the 18th hole to post a 75 (+3), ending the day in a tie for 29th place at 152 (+8). Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) is also tied for 29th place at 152 (+8) after his second consecutive 76 (+4), and Luka Karaula (Zapresic, Croatia) is in 34th place at 153 (+9) after shooting 76 (+4) in the second round.

As a team, Seattle U posted a score of 302 (+14) to remain in sixth place with a two-round total of 600 (+24), four strokes behind UT Pan American in fifth place. New Mexico State took control of the tournament with a second-round score of 285 (-3), pulling out to a 15-stroke lead over Idaho. Kenneth Fadke of New Mexico State shot even-par 72 to stay on top of the individual standings by one stroke over Matthew Charles of UT Pan American.

The third and final round of the tournament is scheduled to start Sunday, May 4, at 7 a.m., with the Redhawk golfers teeing off from the first hole beginning at 7:50 a.m. through 8:30 a.m.
