“Lindsay threw another great game today and Alyssa came in to close it out,” said head coach Dan Powers. “We had timely hitting and hit the ball well all day. I was proud to see that when they came back at us, we were able to score in the next inning to take back the lead. Izzy had a clutch two-out hit and Hayley had a nice pinch hit that put us back ahead. It was a good team win.”
Seattle U took an early lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Brianna Guerrero (Buena Park, Calif.) and an RBI single by Jenny Hurst (Laguna Niguel, Calif.), a lead they would carry through four innings of play.
Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) retired the Kangaroos in order through the first four innings before giving up UMKC’s first hit of the game on a solo home run to center field by Katie Kelley to lead off the fifth. Caitlin Christopher would come around to score on an RBI single by Aly Zembruski to tie the game, 2-2.
The Redhawks regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, 5-2, on a bases-loaded RBI single by Hayley Beckstrom (Maple Valley, Wash.) and a two-out 2RBI single by Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.).
Kansas City narrowed their deficit to a one-run game after Christopher hit a 2RBI home run to right field, but Bubba Morrow (Auburn, Wash.) answered back with a solo shot to center field in the bottom of the frame. Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) entered to pitch for the final inning, retiring the ‘Roos in order as SU came away with the 6-4 win.
Morrow led SU at the plate, going 3-for-3, with two runs, an RBI, and a home run. Christopher went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs, 2 RBIs, and a home run for the ‘Roos.
In the circle, Cinda Ramos made the start for UMKC, giving up two runs on two hits while walking one in 1/3 inning pitched, facing just five batters. Kelley entered in relief, giving up the final four runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out four in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Davis earned her second win of the weekend, allowing four runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three. Reuble earned her third save of the season, facing the final three batters in one inning of work.
Over the weekend, Davis recorded 8.2 innings without giving up a hit and 11 shutout innings in two starts versus UMKC, including a complete game shutout in game one on Friday.
The Redhawks close out their regular season road schedule with a three-game WAC series at Bakersfield next weekend, facing the Roadrunners for a single game on Friday, Apr. 18 at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 19 at 1 p.m.
