Seattle University placed 43 student-athletes on the Western Athletic Conference Winter All-Academic Team, proving that Redhawks excel both athletically and academically, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon. The winter edition of the All-Academic Team features men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field.

“We are thrilled to have 43 student-athletes named to the WAC All-Academic Team this winter,” said assistant athletic director Erin Engelhardt. “We take pride at Seattle U that our student-athletes are balanced competitors, leaders, and scholars.”

Women’s indoor track and field led the way with 12 honorees including sophomores Taylor de Laveaga (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Emily Hedberg (Phoenix, Ariz.), juniors Meghan Arigo (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), Cali Cull (Marysville, Wash.), Sophie Curatilo (Honolulu, Hawai’i), Madison Davis (Camano Island, Wash.) and Candice de Sauvage (Foster City, Calif.), seniors Rosalyn DiLillo (Santa Rosa, Calif.), Hannah Mittelstaedt (Maple Valley, Wash.), Bethany Richards (Shoreline, Wash.), and Katie Tougas (Edmonds, Wash.), and redshirt senior Lauren Hammerle (Seattle, Wash.).

Men’s indoor track and field followed closely behind with 10 honorees including sophomores Gus Arroyo (Portland, Ore.) and Nathan McLaughlin (Puyallup, Wash.), juniors Baxter Arguinchona (Spokane, Wash.), Miles Hille (Woodinville, Wash.) and Collin Overbay (Spokane, Wash.), and seniors Samuel Engle (Portland, Ore.), Graham Kinzel-Grubbs (Portland, Ore.), Zachary Schlachter (Tigard, Ore.), Malaki Seanoa (Everett, Wash.), and Stephen Squatrito (Phoenix, Ariz.).

Men’s swimming and diving placed nine on the list, followed by women’s swimming and diving just behind with eight. Sophomores John Fulmer (Kent, Wash.), Sascha Stipe (Seattle, Wash.), Lee Van Farowe (Edmonds, Wash.), and Chris Weinert (Gresham, Ore.), junior Kyle Moline (Mercer Island, Wash.), and seniors Ali Abadi (Edmonds, Wash.), Nicolas Morrell (Bend, Ore.), Douglas Pizac (Salt Lake City, Utah), and Kieran Schaefer (Sweet Home, Ore.) represented the men’s team.  Sophomores Stephanie Bayless (Spokane, Wash.), Jane Liggett (Portland, Ore.), and Allie McGavock (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), juniors Mackenzie Gant (Richland, Wash.), Bethany Gehrke (Lynnwood, Wash.), Melissa Randolf (Everett, Wash.), and Caroline Van Maren (Bellevue, Wash.) and senior Nicole Doi (Pleasanton, Calif.) represented the women’s team.

Men’s and women’s basketball rounded out the list with women’s basketball earning three honors in sophomore Kristin Stoffel (Mill Creek, Wash.), junior Makenna Clark (Lake Tapps, Wash.), and senior Kacie Sowell (Ventura, Calif.) while redshirt sophomore Luiz Bidart (Sao Paulo, Brazil) represented the men’s squad.

Among all member schools, 332 total winter student-athletes were honored and Seattle U ranked third among conference participant schools behind Grand Canyon (52) and Idaho (48). Utah Valley (35), New Mexico State (29), Kansas City (18), Bakersfield (13), UTPA (11), and Chicago State (9) rounded out the list.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
