Seattle University softball (10-16) tied the game in the fourth but would give up the game-winning run two innings later as they fell, 2-1, to Weber State (12-9) on day one of the USD Tournament I in San Diego.

“Alyssa pitched a great game today but we couldn’t overcome our mistakes to get a win,” said head coach Dan Powers. “Defensively, our infield struggled, gave away too many outs, and didn’t make plays we normally make. Offensively, we have to make adjustments and put together some quality at bats.”

Seattle U left one on base in the opening inning as Brianna Guerrero (Buena Park, Calif.) was stranded at first, reaching on a fielder’s choice. They would leave the bases loaded two innings later as Weber State took the lead in the bottom of the frame on an unearned run scored by Mackenzi Corta.

The Redhawks evened the score, 1-1, a half inning later as Jenny Hurst (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) hit a solo home run down the left field line.

SU held the Wildcats scoreless in the fifth but in the bottom of the sixth, Sara Hingsberger hit an RBI single, driving in Alyson Kulp for an unearned run, which would prove to be the winning run. Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.) reached base on a walk in the final inning, but three straight outs following would end the Redhawks chances.

In the circle, Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) was handed the loss, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out one in six innings pitched. MaCauley Flint earned the win for the Wildcats, allowing a single run on two hits while walking four and striking out 11 batters faced.

The Redhawks return to action in San Diego on Saturday, Mar. 15 with contests vs. Fairleigh Dickinson at 10 a.m. and San Diego at 3 p.m.
