The Seattle University men’s golf team ended the first day of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic, co-hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State University, in 11th place after 36 holes of play at the San Diego Country Club.
Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) was the top Redhawk golfer over the first two rounds, posting scores of 75 (+3) and 76 (+4) to end the day in a tie for 41st place at 151 (+7). Cornett is tied for third among the 83-player field with 26 pars and is also tied for third in par-three scoring at one-under-par.
David Torres (Armenia, Colombia) shot 76 (+4) in each round Monday to end up in a tie for 46th place at 152 (+8), while Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) followed a first-round 75 (+3) with a 79 (+7) in the second round for a cumulative total of 154 (+10) to finish the day in a tie for 53rd place.
Luka Karaula (Zapresic, Croatia) is tied for 69th place at 160 (+16) after rounds of 79 (+7) and 81 (+9), and Ahren Young (Renton, Wash.) is tied for 71st place at 161 (+17) as he shot 78 (+6) and 83 (+11) during the two circuits of the course.
As a team, Seattle U combined for scores of 304 (+16) and 312 (+24) to end the day in 11th place in the team standings at 616 (+40). San Diego State holds a two-stroke lead over Southern California, while Xander Schauffele of San Diego State is two strokes ahead in the individual standings at 138 (-6).
The third and final round of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 11.
