UPDATE as of Mar. 6: The schedule for this weekend's Nevada Classic has been changed due to flight cancellations and travel issues. The Redhawks' Friday games have been cancelled and they will now play two games on Saturday and Sunday. The schedule page has been updated to reflect these changes.
Seattle University softball (10-11) went 5-0 at the Santa Clara Marriott Invitational last weekend, extending their winning streak to seven straight games. This weekend, the Redhawks set their sights on UCSB (11-5) and Nevada (10-7) at the Nevada Classic in Reno. Links to available live stats and video (free) are next to each schedule entry on the softball schedule page at GoSeattleU.com.
The Streak: Seattle U brings a seven-game winning streak into this weekend beginning on Feb. 15 vs. Portland State. This is the team’s longest streak since moving to the Division I level. Their last streak of seven games or longer was 11 games from Feb. 1-Mar. 1, 2008.
Geronimo Named espnW Player of the Week: Isabella Geronimo was named one of espnW's Players of the Week for the week of Feb. 24-Mar. 2 after scoring nine runs, batting .652 (15-for-23), and recording five doubles. She had at least two hits in every game as the Redhawks went 5-0 at the Santa Clara Marriott Invitational vs. Boston U, Santa Clara, and UC Davis.
Scouting UCSB (11-5): UCSB has won five of their last seven games, most recently falling to Northwestern, 10-1, at the Louisville Slugger Invitational in Long Beach. The Gauchos only played three of their six originally scheduled games last weekend due to heavy rainfall. Currently sitting in first place in the Big West standings, UCSB’s Kristen Clark was recently named Big West Field Player of the Week after hitting .818 last weekend. The Gauchos were picked to finish fourth in the BWC standings prior to the start of the season. The 2012 Big West Freshman of the Year, Shelby Wisdom, returns for her junior campaign, and was named BWC Pitcher of the Week earlier this season. The Redhawks are 0-4 all-time vs. the Gauchos.
Scouting Nevada (10-7): The Wolf Pack won six of their first seven to open the season but have most recently lost five of their last six, with three contests at last week’s Mayfair Tournament postponed due to weather. To start the season, Nevada was picked to finish sixth in the Mountain West Preseason Coaches Poll and currently sits in sixth in the league standings. Earlier this season, Amanda Weis was named Mountain West Player of the Week last month after going 4-for-5 with a MWC record tying three home runs, four runs scored, and seven RBI’s in the team’s 20-10 victory over BYU. Of note, the Wolf Pack dropped two on Feb. 21-22 to SU’s fellow WAC foe, Grand Canyon.
