The Seattle University men’s golf team struggled in the third and final round of the Colleton River Collegiate, finishing in sixth place Tuesday at the Colleton River Plantation Club.
Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) shot the team’s best round of the day at four-over-par 76 to finish in a tie for 17th place at eight-over-par 224. He tied for the tournament lead in par-four scoring at one-over-par and finished with eight birdies during the tournament. David Torres (Armenia, Colombia) also ended the tournament tied for 17th place at eight-over-par 224, but that was after a third round score of 80 (+8).
Luka Karaula (Zapresic, Croatia) finished in a tie for 20th place at nine-over-par 225 after shooting 77 (+5) in the final round. Ahren Young (Renton, Wash.) and Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) both shot 81 (+9) in Monday’s round, with Young finishing in 37th place at 232 (+16), just ahead of Sato in a tie for 38th place with a cumulative score of 234 (+18).
As a team, Seattle University’s third round score of 314 (+26) slid the Redhawks into sixth place with a 54-hole total of 904 (+40). Winthrop came from behind for the team victory by one stroke over Kennesaw State and two strokes over Michigan State, while Charlie Netzel of Michigan State was declared the medalist after winning a scorecard playoff over Zach Seabolt of Winthrop, with both players ending the tournament at one-under-par 215.
The Seattle University men’s golf team next participates in the Lamkin San Diego Classic, co-hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State University, at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif., March 10-11.
