Seattle University head women’s soccer coach Julie Woodward announced the team’s signing class for the 2014 season - Isabelle Butterfield (Bellevue, Wash.), Kai-Bin Ooi (Centennial, Colo.), Jennifer Plummer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Sunshine Soriano (Henderson, Nev.), Emily Postma (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Sydney Carlson (Bellevue, Wash.), Denise Garcia (Chino Hills, Calif.), Isabella Guerry (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), Sarah Ishikawa (Westlake Village, Calif.), Madeline Racine (Sammamish, Wash.), Stephanie Spiekerman (Seattle, Wash.), Celia Vaughn (Gig Harbor, Wash.), and Abby Bouck (Greenwood Village, Colo.).

“This class has big shoes to fill, and I think they can do it,” said Woodward. “Our outgoing senior class changed this program, not because of their talent, but because of their commitment, character and consistency.  The student-athletes in our 2014 class are talented young women with impressive character.  If they commit to improving every day and representing Seattle U with the same maturity and work ethic that our seniors did, they will help this program will take another major step forward.”

Isabelle Butterfield, 5’7”, Forward
Bellevue High School/Bellevue, Wash., Eastside FC 95 Red
Isabelle Butterfield is a four-year varsity starter and two-year team captain from Bellevue High School in Bellevue, Wash. where she helped the Wolverines to a 17-4 record and a 3A KingCo Conference Championship in 2013. The Wolverines made four straight 3A KingCo playoff appearances during her career (2010-13), placing third in the state in 2013. Butterfield was named First Team All-KingCo in 2012 and 2013 as well as First Team All-State, All-Area, All KingCo MVP, and Seattle Times Star Times. At BHS, she was named Most Valuable Player in 2010 and 2013 and Most Influential Player in 2012 and was the league’s leading scorer in 2013 with 19 goals. She helped lead Eastside FC 95 Red to four Washington State championships (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013), taking the team to the Far West Regionals in 2011, and has served as team captain in 2013 and 2014. Academically, she’s a National Merit Commended Scholar and received an AP Scholar Award. She enjoys hiking, playing the piano, and helping others, and aspires to be an engineer.

Woodward on Butterfield: “Izzy just keeps getting better.  She continues to add different elements to her game and is always working hard and competing.  Through her consistent attitude to improve, Izzy has become one of the best players in the state.  I know she will make a big impact on this program.”

Kai-Bin Ooi, 5’3”, Midfielder
Arapahoe High School/Centennial, Colo., Real Colorado Soccer
Kai-Bin Ooi is a four-year varsity starter from Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo., who helped lead the Warriors to state playoff appearances in 2011 and 2012 and a Centennial League Championship in 2012. She was named Second Team Centennial League All-Conference in 2013, also named Midfield MVP and Team MVP. She is a National Honor Society member, an academic letterwinner, a High Honor Roll student, a Student Council member, Key Club Member, and a Unified Basketball Coach. Competing with Real Colorado Soccer since 2008, she helped the team win a state championship in 2010. Ooi is interested in pursuing a career in environmental engineering.

Woodward on Ooi: “Kai’s leadership on the field is what first caught my attention.  She is a technical, smart, competitive midfielder who leads vocally and by example.  Her attitude to press is one of the best I’ve seen. I know she is going to add a lot to our midfield and the future leadership of the team.”

Jennifer Plummer, 5’8”, Midfielder
Highlands Ranch High School/Highlands Ranch, Colo., Real Colorado 95/96 ECNL
Jennifer Plummer is a four-year varsity starter and two-year academic letterwinner from Highlands Ranch High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo. Plummer helped lead the Falcons to playoff appearances in 2011, 2012, 2013, and the Class 5A State quarterfinals in 2011. She was named First Team All-League and First Team All-State in 2013, was named team captain in 2013, and was one of five Women in Sports Honorees from HRHS in 2014, recognized for athletic, academic, and leadership achievement. Plummer recorded 21 points in 15 games in 2013 and was the top scorer for the Falcons. Most recently, she has competed with Real Colorado 95/96 ECNL, also previously competing with Real Colorado Olympico (2008-10), and Real Colorado 95/96 National (2006-08). She also was on the 2008 ODP state team and participated in Region IV ODP camp the same year. She is a Link Crew member and three-year academic honor roll member (2011, 2012, 2013), also receiving the Scholar-Athlete Award in 2013. Plummer plays guitar, drums, and piano, sings, and is interested in pursuing a career in physical therapy or education.

Woodward on Plummer: “Jenny is another player that has taken her game to another level since she committed.  She is an outstanding athlete, but she doesn’t rely on her athleticism.  Jenny has become a solid possession player with a special ability to beat people out wide and earn goals and assists.”

Sunshine Soriano, 5’4”, Forward
Liberty High School/Henderson, Nev., Heat
Sunshine Soriano is a two-year varsity letterwinner from Liberty High School in Henderson, Nev. who helped lead the Patriots to a playoff appearance during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. In 2010, she was named Rookie of the Year as she recorded a hat trick on Dec. 3, 2010 to lead Liberty to a 3-1 victory and was awarded Offensive Player of the Year in 2011. She has competed in Nevada’s Olympic Development Program (2008-10) and made the Philippine Women’s National U19 Team, taking part in the ASEAN Football Federation Championship in 2013 in Myanmar. She is the co-captain of Nevada’s top ranked club team, the Heat, since 2005, during which the team has won the state cup three times. She enjoys traveling, volunteering, and tutoring/mentoring and aspires to be a pediatrician.

Woodward on Soriano: “Sunshine is one of the hardest working players in the country.  She can run all day, beat you 1v1 out wide, or play as a target.  She is physical, strong and fast, but also technical and understands the game.  I know that every time she takes the field, I’ll be glad she’s on our team.” 

Emily Postma, 5’9”, Defender
Rock Canyon High School/Highlands Ranch, Colo., Real Colorado
Emily Postma is a three-year varsity letterwinner from Rock Canyon High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo. where she helped the Jaguars to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2012 and 2013. She was named 5A Colorado Soccer First Team All-Conference as well as RCHS Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. She has competed with two different club teams including Real Colorado (2006-14) and Real Colorado National ECNL (2012-14). Academically, Postma earned a place on the honor roll and has been an academic letterwinner through all four years of high school. She enjoys traveling and babysitting in her free time outside of soccer and school.

Woodward on Postma: “Emily is a lock-down defender.  She is athletic, smart and tough.  Players from her club know how to compete, and Emily is one of the more competitive players I’ve seen.  She will contend to play in our back line right away.” 

Sydney Carlson, 5’9”, Midfielder
Interlake High School/Bellevue, Wash., Crossfire ECNL
Sydney Carlson is a first year transfer from the University of Colorado and a dual sport varsity letterwinner in both soccer and cross country from Interlake High School in Bellevue, Wash. Carlson helped lead the Saints to a state championship during her junior season. She has competed with Crossfire ECNL since 2011 and the team won the state championship the same season. Outside of soccer, she is interested in majoring in communications and pursuing a career in business.

Woodward on Carlson: “Sydney is a Seattle U person. She is a great fit for our program, and we are very happy that she ended up here.  Her technical skills and ability to read the game will help her compete to play in our midfield.  She is always working with the ball, and we expect to see her continue to improve.”

Denise Garcia, 5’5”, Midfielder
Chino Hills High School/Chino Hills, Calif., Legends FC
Denise Garcia is a four-year varsity starter and varsity captain (2012-14) from Chino Hills High School in Chino Hills, Calif., where she helped lead the Huskies to the CIF semifinals and quarterfinals in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The Huskies also won the Sierra League Championship in 2013, finishing with an 18-2 record. She was named Second Team All-League in 2011 and 2012 and First Team All-League in 2013, as well as Defensive MVP at CHHS in 2012. Garcia has also competed with Glendora FC (2005-08), Legends FC (2009-11, 2013-14), and Fram FC (2011-12). She has won a League Championship with two different club teams, with Glendora FC in 2006-07 and Legends FC in 2009, as well as winning a National Cup Championship in 2012 with Fram FC. She served as a captain for Legends FC (2009-11), a Cal South ODP Captain (2009-11), and earned Region IV Player honors (2010-11). She is interested in a career as a nurse anesthetist and, in her spare time, she enjoys going on hikes, running, drinking coffee, and watching football.

Woodward on Garcia: “Denise has the qualities to be a top player in college.  As a central midfielder, she covers ground, anticipates the play, combines with her teammates and can break lines on the dribble.  Denise can be dominant in the air, and can also play in the back line.  She has a very high ceiling.”

Isabella Guerry, 5’6”, Midfielder
JSerra Catholic High School/San Juan Capistrano, Calif., West Coast Futbol Club
Isabella Guerry is a four-year varsity starter at center midfielder from JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. With the Lions, she was named Offensive MVP in 2011 and 2013 and Team MVP in 2012. She has competed with the West Coast Futbol Club since 2003, helping lead the team to League and National Cup Championships in 2010 and an ECNL third place finish in 2012. Outside of soccer, Guerry is a member of Associated Student Government, the Environmental Club, and Campus Ministry. She also has a passion for music and creative writing and is interested in a career in music management.

Woodward on Guerry: “Isy is such a high level player and she is dominant in the air. She scores goals, completes a high percentage of her passes, moves after the pass, defends and always works hard for her team.  Isy can also play as a target. She is such a great fit for Seattle U, both on and off the field.

Sarah Ishikawa, 5’3”, Defender
Westlake High School/Westlake Village, Calif., Real So Cal
Sarah Ishikawa is an outside back and four-year varsity starter from Westlake High School in Westlake Village, Calif. She was named Second-Team All-Marmonte League in 2013 and helped lead the Warriors to a Marmonte League title over the past three seasons. Previously competing with the Eagles Soccer Club, she currently competes with Real So Cal in club play. With Real So Cal, the team won the Surf Cup in 2011 and won the ECNL Championship Flight B in 2013. Ishikawa is interested in pursuing a career in business.

Woodward on Ishikawa: “Sarah has a ton of experience playing at a high level.  She is a very technical player and extremely accurate with her distribution.  Sarah is versatile and can also play in the midfield. We are excited to add such a great person and player to the program.”

Madeline Racine, 5’6”, Defender
Eastside Catholic High School/Sammamish, Wash., Eastside FC Girls 95 Red
Madeline Racine is a four-year varsity starter from Eastside Catholic High School in Sammamish, Wash. She helped lead the Crusaders to the state semifinals in 2011-12 and received the Crusader Award in 2013. Racine was named Division 3A All-League First Team (2012, 2013), Division 3A All-League Second Team (2011), Division 3A Washington State Semifinalist (2011), and Division 3A All-League Honorable Mention (2010). Competing with Eastside FC Girls 95 Red, the team won the Washington State Cup in 2009, 2010, and 2012, as well as advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2011 Region IV Championship and the semifinals in the 2012 edition. At Eastside Catholic, she has served as ASB secretary, is a National Honor Society member, and received the Junior Principal Award. Racine is interested in pursuing a career in nursing and enjoys playing the piano, singing, traveling, and giving back to her community.

Woodward on Racine: “Maddie is a perfect fit for our team.  She is constantly improving, coachable, and understands the game at a high level.  Her distribution is fantastic, especially on set pieces. Maddie can play anywhere along the back line.  She’s the kind of person and player that you want on your team. 

Stephanie Spiekerman, 5’8”, Forward
Bishop Blanchet High School/Seattle, Wash., NWNationals
Stephanie Spiekerman is a four-year varsity starter, recording eight goals and six assists in 2013, from Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle, Wash. Spiekerman helped the Braves advance to the metro playoffs all four years, state quarterfinals in 2011 and 2013, and a metro championship in 2013. She was named First Team All-Metro (2013), also named a BBHS Scholar-Athlete (2011), Offensive MVP (2012, 2013), and team captain (2013). Excelling not just in soccer, she has competed in varsity track, placing at state all four years. Earning her best finish in 2011 as a metro and district champion and placing fifth at state in the 3200m, she was also named Most Inspirational Player (2011, 2012) and Team MVP (2013). Spiekerman competed with Kajumulo Farasi in club play from 2006-12 and most recently with NWNationals (2011-present). She helped lead Kajumulo Farasi to a state Commissioners Cup in 2007 and a PSPL state cup in 2011. Academically, she has earned a place on the honor roll all four years and is a National Merit Commended Scholar.

Woodward on Spiekerman: “Stephanie has big-time potential.  She has great feet, and the way she looks on the ball reminds me of Kara Kuttler.  Stephanie can score goals from distance or create opportunities inside the 18.  She is a competitor and will be a great addition to our team.”

Celia Vaughn, 5’8”, Midfielder
Gig Harbor High School/Gig Harbor, Wash., Washington Premier FC 95 ECNL
Celia Vaughn is an attacking center and outside midfielder and three year varsity starter from Gig Harbor High School in Gig Harbor, Wash. Vaughn helped lead the Tides to the 4A State Playoffs (2012), 4A Narrows League Championship (2011, 2012), the school’s first 4A State Semifinals appearance since 1997 (2011), and a 4A SPSL District Championship (2011). Individually, she was named to the 4A All-State First Team (2012), 4A All-District First Team (2012), and 4A All-League First Team (2011, 2012). Vaughn was also named Peninsula Gateway Top 10 Athlete of the Year (2011) and earned a Top 10 Plays of the Year award (2011, 2012), as well as the 2011 Golden Boot Award, 2012 Offensive MVP Award, and 2012 Coach’s Award. She opted not to play high school soccer during her senior year, instead training with a nationally ranked U17 boys team at Washington Premier FC. Competing with Washington Premier FC 95 ECNL, where she is the 2013-14 team captain, she helped lead the team to a 2011 USYSA Washington State Championship. At GHHS, she is a National Honor Society member, a Meistersingers Honor Choir member, and received the Soroptimist International Violet Richardson Community Service Award.

Woodward on Vaughn: “Celia is a special attacking player.  She has the rare combination of technique, athleticism and drive. Celia can create on the dribble from wide positions or through the middle.  She is going to add a dynamic attacking quality to our team, and I know she will fit right in with her work ethic and commitment to soccer, academics, and the community.”

Abby Bouck, 5’7”, Goalkeeper
Cherry Creek High School/Greenwood Village, Colo., Colorado Storm ECNL Copa U16-U18
Abby Bouck is a varsity letterwinner and starting goalkeeper for the Colorado Storm ECNL Copa U16-U18, also competing at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colo.  She helped lead the Bruins to the semifinals of the state playoffs in 2013, recording a 10-5-1 record. Prior to competing with her current club team, she competed with Colorado Storm White U11-U15 from 2007-11.Outside of soccer, she is an accomplished studio art student, a community service leader, and an avid skier, and competed in volleyball at CCHS during the 2010-11 school year. Academically, she has received High Honor Roll honors (2010-2014), is an academic letterwinner (2012-14), and was a DECA state qualifier.

Woodward on Bouck: “We are very excited to add a goalkeeper of Abby’s ability to our program. She has natural athletic ability, good hands, and a high-level understanding of the game.  Our goalkeepers have always performed at their best with a little competition, and Abby will definitely compete.”
