After playing a key part in Seattle University women’s tennis’ wins over the weekend, especially in the historic win at Gonzaga, Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) has been named Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com.

“Corinne has really been able to step up and play her game in tough matches rather than waiting for the other person to make a mistake,” said head coach Mark Frisby. “This makes her a lot more aggressive on key points.”

Over the weekend, Wurden earned three wins at No. 6 singles and two wins at No. 3 doubles with partner Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas). On Feb. 7 at Gonzaga, she earned the final singles point, clinching the team’s historic victory. She also earned singles victories at Eastern Washington on Feb. 9 and Lewis-Clark State on Feb. 6. With James, the duo earned doubles wins at Lewis-Clark State and Eastern Washington.

The Redhawks went 3-2 over the weekend, earning their first ever victory at Gonzaga, 4-3, on Feb. 7, also defeating Eastern Washington, 5-2, on Feb. 9 and sweeping Lewis-Clark State, 7-0, on Feb. 6.

Wurden also excels academically, as she currently has a 3.525 cumulative GPA as a nursing major.

The Seattle University athletics department names a Featured Student-Athlete each Tuesday based on performances both in the classroom and in competition.
