Seattle U to Host SJSU on Senior Night: Seattle University men’s soccer (7-8-4, 6-0-3 WAC) remains undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play with one regular season match remaining after clinching the WAC Regular Season title this past weekend. They extended their unbeaten streak to eight games with a 1-1 tie at Houston Baptist on Nov. 1 and a 4-3 come-from-behind win at Kansas City on Nov. 3. Jonathan Massimino received WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors while Michael Roberts was named Capital One Academic All-District this past week. Jake Feener remains on top of NCAA DI men’s soccer standings in total saves (127) and moves back into first place in saves per game (6.68) while Miguel Gonzalez is tied for sixth in DI in total goals (12). The Redhawks host San Jose State on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. as they honor the 2013 senior class. Following the match, there will also be a recognition of the team’s 2013 WAC Regular Season Championship. Two of a Kind: Both the Seattle U men’s and women’s soccer teams have secured the 2013 WAC Regular Season title and the No. 1 seed in their respective WAC tournaments. This brings Seattle U’s tally of WAC Regular Season titles to three in just their second year in the conference after women’s basketball completed the feat in 2012-13.
Michael Roberts Named Capital One Academic All-District: Michael Roberts represented the Redhawks on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District First Team, NCAA Division I District VIII. Roberts became the first Academic All-District honoree for men’s soccer since 2009 when Derek Rogalsky was named First Team, University Division, and the first ever honoree for the program since reclassifying back to Division I. The honor recognizes top student athletes for both their performances on the field and in the classroom.
Jonathan Massimino Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 28-Nov. 3): Massimino received his first career WAC Player of the Week honor, the third for the team this season. Massimino scored in back-to-back road matches for the Redhawks over the weekend, including the game-winning goal in the team’s 4-3 come-from-behind victory at Kansas City on Nov. 3. On Nov. 1, he scored the team’s only goal in the 1-1 draw at Houston Baptist. Over the weekend, he took five shots, three on goal. This season, Massimino has recorded three goals, two assists, eight points, 15 shots, eight on goal, and two game-winning goals. College Sports Madness also named Massimino WAC Player of the Week.

Scouting San Jose State (3-11-3, 3-5-1 WAC): San Jose State brings a 3-11-3 record into the regular season finale, but has won or tied three of their last four matches, including wins vs. Grand Canyon and at Kansas City, most recently falling, 5-0, at Houston Baptist on Nov. 3. Earlier this season, in their conference home opener, the Redhawks defeated the Spartans, 4-0, in San Jose on Oct. 5. Rory Knibbs leads the team with seven goals and 37 shots, including 22 on goal, as well as two game-winning goals. In goal, Emmanuel Espinosa has made 11 starts, tallying 45 saves, while Felix Petermann has made seven appearances, making 28 saves. Gary St. Clair, in his 24th season at the helm, is one of just two head coaches in 85 years of SJSU men’s soccer to reach the 200th victory plateau.
WAC Tournament: The 2013 WAC Tournament will be hosted by Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 14-17. Besides Grand Canyon, who is not yet eligible for NCAA Championships through their reclassification period, all seven other teams will advance to the conference tournament. As the Regular Season Champions, Seattle U will receive the first round bye and play their first match on Friday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. MT vs. the winner of the No.4/No.5 seed match.
