Seattle University men’s soccer, remaining on top of Western Athletic Conference standings, played Houston Baptist (7-6-2, 2-4-2 WAC) to a 1-1 tie Friday night at Sorrels Field in Houston, Texas. With the tie, the Redhawks (6-8-4, 5-0-3 WAC) remain undefeated in WAC play.

“Now we’ve played eight overtime games and we battled in the overtimes,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “We had a good goal by Jonathan Massimino early with a terrific assist by Miguel. It was good effort, for sure, and we remain undefeated in the league which is important. Jake Feener continues to have a good season, as well. I’m proud of the guys – they continue to improve and continue to battle.”

Jonathan Massimino (San Ramon, Calif.) put the Redhawks ahead early on his second goal of the season just a minute and a half into the game on an assist by Miguel Gonzalez (Yelm, Wash.).

Just over six minutes into the second half, in the 52nd minute, Stefan Lamanna tied the game on an assist by Walter Kromholz after the ball rebounded off the post from a prior shot.

Seattle U earned a corner kick in the 80th minute, but unable to capitalize on the chance, the score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation to send the game into SU’s eighth overtime game of the season.

SU earned a corner kick and Kyle Bjornethun (Snohomish, Wash.) took a shot, which flew high, in the 95th minute. In the 98th minute, Seattle U had their best chance to take the lead as Gonzalez earned a penalty kick, but Houston Baptist Kevin Suarez saved the ball.

In the 107th minute, the Redhawks had back-to-back-to-back shots by Justice Duerksen (San Clemente, Calif.), Brady Ballew (Marysville, Wash.), and Gonzalez, but the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

In goal, Feener made six saves, while Suarez made three saves for Houston Baptist. As a team, HBU outshot SU, 22-17, as Gonzalez led the team with four shots, one on goal.
