Playing the same Ocean Course as in Sunday’s first round, the Seattle University golf team improved its play over the 18 holes and finished seventh after Tuesday’s third and final round of the Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate, hosted by Santa Clara University.
Freshman Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) played another steady round, shooting even-par 72 to end the tournament in a tie for third place with a final score of 218 (+2). David Torres (Armenia, Colombia) shot Seattle U’s best round of the day and the tournament, posting a final-round score of one-under-par 71 to move up into a tie for 13th place at 221 (+5).
Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) shot 77 (+5) in the third round for a three-day total of 228 (+12), finishing in a tie for 30th place. Luka Karaula (Zapresic, Croatia) finished in 52nd place at 235 (+19) after a third-round score of 78 (+6), just ahead of teammate Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.), who shot 76 (+4) Tuesday for a three-round total of 237 (+21) and a 53rd-place finish.
As a team, Seattle U combined for a third-round score of 296 (+8), 13 strokes better than its first time around the Ocean Course Sunday. The Redhawks finished in seventh place with a final total of 895 (+31). UC Irvine came from behind to take the team title by one stroke over San Francisco, while Jobim Carlos of San Francisco completed a wire-to-wire victory with a three-round score of 212 (-4), five strokes clear of Tyler Thomas of Texas State.
The Seattle University men’s golf team will play two tournaments in the span of a week to conclude the fall season, starting with the Bill Cullum Invitational Oct. 21-22 in Simi Valley, Calif., followed by the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Invitational Oct. 25-26 in El Paso, Texas.
