The Seattle University men’s golf team improved from the first round to the second round Monday, finishing the day in 15th place as darkness suspended play at the Bill Cullum Invitational, hosted by Cal State Northridge.
After shooting even-par 72 in the first round, David Torres (Armenia, Colombia) got off to a bad start in the second round with a double bogey and two bogeys over the first five holes. Torres rebounded by making six birdies without a bogey over his final 13 holes to post a second-round total of 70 (-2) for a cumulative score of 142 (-2), good enough to end the day in a tie for 14th place.
Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) was able to finish all 36 holes before darkness set in, improving from a first-round 73 (+1) to a second-round 69 (-3), including five birdies on the second circuit, for a two-round total of 142 (-2), also sitting in a tie for 14th place. Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) posted scores of 77 (+5) and 75 (+3) for a 36-hole total of 152 (+8), currently tied for 66th place.
Luka Karaula (Zapresic, Croatia) shot 79 (+7) in the first round and 77 (+5) in the second round, currently sitting in a tie for 89th place at 156 (+12). Ahren Young (Renton, Wash.) bounced back from an opening-round 85 (+13) with a 77 (+5) in the second round, finishing the day in 103rd place with a cumulative total of 162 (+18).
As a team, Seattle University combined for a score of 301 (+13) in the first round before lowering its team score to 291 (+3) in the second round for a 36-hole total of 592 (+16), currently sitting in 15th place. San Diego took a two-shot lead with a first-round 282 (-6) and followed that with a 275 (-13) in the second round to increase its lead over Arizona State to six strokes. Jon Rahm of Arizona State is in the lead at 137 (-7) by one shot over Mark Anguiano of Cal State Fullerton.
Those golfers needing to complete their second rounds will do so Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7:45 a.m. before the scheduled shotgun start to the third round at 8:00 a.m.
