The Redhawks will host Utah Valley in their first ever game "under the lights" on Oct. 18 and their annual Pink Match on Oct. 20.

Redhawks Returns Home for First Game “Under the Lights”, Pink Match: Seattle University women’s soccer (9-2-2, 6-0-0 WAC), remaining on top of league standings, is riding a seven-game winning streak and six straight shutouts into this weekend’s conference matchups. The Redhawks will host Utah Valley on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:15 p.m. in their first ever game “under the lights”. On Sunday, Oct. 20, SU welcomes Bakersfield to Championship Field for their annual Pink Match, with select proceeds going to Susan G. Komen to benefit breast cancer research. Mary Hill was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 7-13, marking the fourth straight week that the Redhawks have earned at least one WAC nod (seven total on the season). Redhawks Sit Atop WAC Standings: After four weekends of conference play, Seattle U sits atop league standings with a perfect 6-0-0 WAC record.

Regional Rankings: After moving into the top 10 two weeks ago, the Redhawks have now moved up to No. 8 in the Oct. 15 edition of the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women’s West Regional Poll.

Let There Be Light: Championship Field, the home of Seattle U men’s and women’s soccer, recently received a significant enhancement in the form of lights. The women’s soccer program’s first ever match “under the lights” falls on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. vs. Utah Valley.

Redhawks to Hold Annual Pink Match: Seattle U will host Bakersfield on Oct. 20 in their annual “Pink Match” to benefit Susan G. Komen and breast cancer research. As part of the day’s celebration, there will be raffles, silent auction, donation buckets, and t-shirts for sale. All popcorn sales and half of ticket sales will also go to benefit Susan G. Komen. The women’s soccer players will also do post-game autographs following the match.

Hill Named WAC Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 7-13): Mary Hill has been named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 7-13. This is Hill’s first such career honor, bringing SU’s 2013 total to seven, and marking the fourth straight week in which the Redhawks have received at least one honoree. Hill assisted Stephanie Verdoia’s second goal of the match in the team’s 5-0 shutout at Grand Canyon on Oct. 11, also anchoring the SU defense that allowed only one shot on goal in the win. She also has been a key starter for the Redhawk backline which has recorded six straight shutouts.

Scouting Utah Valley: Last weekend, Utah Valley topped Kansas City, 2-0, on Oct. 11 and tied New Mexico State, 2-2, on Oct. 13 and have won or tied six of their last eight matches. Their only losses in that span have come from Seattle U and Idaho on their home field. Kali Stubbs leads the Wolverines with six goals and 13 points, while Haley Curtis has taken a team-high 42 shots. Lauren Sack has made 13 of 14 starts in goal, recording 72 saves and a 1.40 GAA.

Scouting Bakersfield: Bakersfield has won two of their last three games, but had previously lost 9 of their last 10 games prior. The Roadrunners topped Idaho, 1-0, on Oct. 6 before defeating New Mexico State on Oct. 11, 2-1, in 2OT. In their final match on the weekend, they were shut out by Kansas City, 3-0, on Oct. 13. Erica Shelton and Emily Noethe have scored a team-high three goals apiece, while Shelton has also added four assists for a team-leading 10 points. Tori Ornela has started 11 of 14 games in goal, recording 39 saves and a 2.16 GAA. In three starts and six appearance in goal, Megan Vina has recorded 25 saves and a 1.86 GAA.

Grand Canyon (10/11): The Seattle University women’s soccer team kept rolling along, extending its shutout streak to over 620 minutes with a 5-0 victory over Grand Canyon in a Western Athletic Conference match at GCU Soccer Field. Seattle U’s offense pressured the Grand Canyon defense right from the start of the match, taking six shots in the first 26 minutes. The Redhawks finally broke through in the 27th minute when Taylor Ritzman drove down the right side and sent the ball into the box, where Natasha Howe converted on her sixth goal of the season. Late in the first half, Stephanie Verdoia continued her goal-scoring prowess, taking the ball near the midfield line and driving towards the net before earning her ninth goal of the season. Midway through the second half, Verdoia picked up her second goal of the match, this time taking a long pass from Mary Hill and burying her shot into the back of the net. Less than three minutes later, the Redhawks extended their advantage as Ritzman and Kiana Kraft combined with Jacqui Wallis as Wallis scored her fourth goal of the season by lofting the ball over the Antelope goalie’s head. Wallis assisted on Seattle U’s final goal of the match, sending a long cross from the left side to Julia Moravec in the box for Moravec’s third tally of the season.Seattle U has now scored 22 unanswered goals since giving up a goal to Grand Canyon four minutes into the first meeting between the two teams at Championship Field Sept. 20. Brianna Smallidge earned her ninth victory of the season, while Aris Coover made a save in almost 14 minutes of action. The Redhawks outshot the Antelopes, 17-7, and earned five corner kicks while not allowing the home team to take any corner kicks. Verdoia led the Redhawks with six shots, five of them on goal, while Grand Canyon’s Chelsea Santos was the only member of her team credited with more than one shot, taking two during the match. Catherine Lena made five saves for Grand Canyon.
