San Jose State (10/5): The team earned their first ever Western Athletic Conference win with a 4-0 shutout at San Jose State to open their conference schedule. Miguel Gonzalez put the Redhawks ahead, scoring what would be the game-winning winning goal in the 23rd minute of the match on a long through-ball, beating SJSU keeper Emmanuel Espinosa high to the far post. Ian Hines-Ike was credited with the assist Just over three minutes later, Brady Ballew scored his second goal of the season in the 26th minute as Justice Duerksen sent a long pass to Ballew, who dribbled into the box and sailed the ball past the keeper near the low far post. Leading 2-0 at the half, the Redhawks added to their tally on another pair of goals just 48 seconds apart. Hamza Haddadi scored his first goal of the season on a long through ball from Kyle Bjornethun to put the Redhawks ahead, 3-0, in the 74th minute. In the 75th minute, Gonzalez added his second goal of the game, his seventh of the season, on a penalty kick to insure the 4-0 Seattle U win. Haddadi and Gonzalez led SU with five shots apiece, three on frame, as the Redhawks outshot the Spartans, 19-16. Hines-Ike and Bjornethun’s assists marked firsts in each of their collegiate careers. In goal, Jake Feener made eight saves for the Redhawks, still leading the nation in NCAA Division I saves, while Espinosa made three saves, allowing all four goals for the Spartans. This is Seattle U’s first shutout of the season as they have won two of their last three matches, also defeating Florida Gulf Coast, 3-2, in overtime on Sept. 22.
