David Torres (Armenia, Colombia) notched his third consecutive under-par round, and Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) also shot a below-par round Tuesday to help the Seattle University men’s golf team advance into a tie for third place at the conclusion of the Dash Thomas Memorial, hosted by Boise State at The Club at SpurWing.
Torres posted a third-round score of 68 (-3) to move up into third place in the final standings at 207 (-6), just two strokes behind tournament champion Tanner Higham of Utah State. Torres collected six birdies during Tuesday’s final round to finish the tournament with 17 birdies, most among the field, plus he tied for the lead in par-five scoring at eight-under-par.
Cornett earned the first under-par round of his collegiate career, shooting 69 (-2) to end the week in a tie for 11th place at 213 (even). He completed the tournament with 12 birdies and shot one-under-par on the par-four holes, tied with Torres for fourth among the entire field.
Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) posted his best score of the tournament, shooting 73 (+2) for a cumulative total of 222 (+9), good enough for a tie for 28th place. Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) shot 78 (+7) in the final round for a 54-hole total of 229 (+16) to put him in a tie for 50th place, and Luka Karaula (Zapresic, Croatia) finished in 65th place after a final-round 85 (+14) led to a three-round total of 236 (+23).
As a team, Seattle U combined for a score of 288 (+4), the third-best team total of the round, to join Cal State Fullerton in a tie for third place at 865 (+13), just two strokes behind second-place Idaho. Sacramento State ran away with the team title by 12 strokes after shooting 285 (+1) in the third round for a 54-hole total of 851 (-1).
The Seattle University men’s golf team heads to San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico, for the Cabo Del Sol Intercollegiate, hosted by Santa Clara University Oct. 6-8.
