Seattle University women’s soccer junior forward Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) has been named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 16-22. This is the third WAC honor for the Redhawks this season, as Natasha Howe and Brianna Smallidge were named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of Aug. 26 – Sept. 1. This is Verdoia’s second such career honor, also named for the week of Oct. 1-7, 2012.

“Stephanie really had a great weekend for us,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “She has worked extremely hard to become a very complete player and her ability to score or set her teammates up makes her very dangerous. On top of all that, she is an amazing leader by example. Going into the weekend, she had a phenomenal week of practice which carried over to the games.”

Over the weekend, she recorded seven shots, four on goal, also recording a goal versus Cal Poly and three total assists in the team’s victories over Grand Canyon and Cal Poly. She also led the team with four shots vs. Grand Canyon on Sept. 20 and set up Julia Besagno’s (Maple Valley, Wash.) goal on a penalty kick, getting pulled down in the box versus the Mustangs on Sept. 22.

To date this season, she has recorded three goals and a team-high five assists, 11 points, and 19 shots.

Verdoia was also named WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.

Utah Valley’s Lauren Sack was named Defensive Player of the Week recording two shutouts in the team’s victories versus Bakersfield over the weekend.

After one weekend of conference play, Seattle U ranks second in the WAC standings, with a 1-0-0 record, as the Redhawks only played one conference match over the weekend. Utah Valley currently has a 2-0-0 league record.

The Redhawks remain at home as they continue league play, hosting Kansas City on Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. and New Mexico State on Sept. 29 at 12 noon.

The nominees for each position are as follows:

Other Offensive Nominees: Katie Baran (Idaho), Taylor Layton (Grand Canyon), Taylor Bare (Kansas City), Katie Smith (New Mexico State), Kali Stubbs (Utah Valley)

Other Defensive Nominees: Jessica Valadez (Grand Canyon), Nina Tzianos (Kansas City), Mikaela Haley (New Mexico State), Julia Besagno (Seattle U)
