Seattle University women’s tennis opened the 2013-14 season at the Jack Taylor Classic hosted by Boise State. Of note, Kristen James/Corinne Wurden and Sarah Lucas/Jacqueline Jacques earned doubles wins on day one.
In Blue Flight singles, Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) was defeated by Boise State’s Megan LaLone by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) was defeated by Washington State’s Elizaveta Luzina by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Boise State’s Sandy Vo advanced over Barbara Carey (Seattle, Wash.) by scores of 6-0, 6-3.
In the blue flight’s first round loss consolation bracket, Weissmann was defeated by Weber State’s Agata Bachanek, 6-3, 6-2. Montana’s Ashley Mackey defeated Lambert in the same bracket. Later in the afternoon, Carey defeated Idaho State’s Kasey Bacon, 6-4, 6-3, advancing to face Abilene Christian’s Brittney Reed tomorrow at 10 a.m.
In Orange Flight singles, Kelli Woodman (Denver, Colo.) defeated Montana’s Mackenzie Rozell, 6-3, 6-1, advancing to face Washington State’s Maria Biryukova, but fell to Biryukova, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, and will face Idaho State’s Laura Theus in the second round loss consolation bracket tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) was defeated by Abilene Christian’s Kaysie Hermsdorf, 6-0, 6-2, and Jacqueline Jacques (Modesto, Calif.) was also defeated by Montana State’s Wena Tsan, 6-3, 6-0, in the same bracket.
In the orange flight’s first round consolation bracket, Lucas defeated Montana State’s Jessica Brycki, 6-1, 6-2, advancing to face Weber State’s Nittaya Phonharath tomorrow at 10 a.m. In the same bracket, Jacques was defeated by Eastern Washington’s Dani Young, 7-5, 6-3.
In the White Flight singles bracket, Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) was defeated by Utah State’s Katie Sweet, 6-4, 7-5. In the same bracket, Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) defeated Weber State’s Lauren Schulte and later defeated Montana State’s Gabi Villegas, 6-1, 6-2. Wurden will face Utah State’s Lexi Turley on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
In the first round consolation bracket, James defeated Eastern Washington’s Brittany Ellingsen, 6-1, 6-2, and will face Weber State’s Megan Rindlisbacher on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
In doubles play, Montana’s Sasha Carter/Maddy Murray defeated SU’s Carey/ Weissmann, 8-2. Carey/Weissmann will face Weber State’s Agata Bachanek/Thais Kurer on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the first round loss consolation bracket.
Woodman/Lambert was defeated by Weber State’s Michelle Warwick/Phonharath, 8-2. The SU pair moves on to face Utah State’s Amber Stuhlman/Ashley Stuhlman on Saturday in the first round loss consolation bracket.
James/Wurden earned a doubles win over Utah State’s Lexi Turley/Cassidy Branstine, 9-7, and Lucas/Jacques defeated Rita Bermudez (Idaho)/Katie Sweet (Utah State), 8-6. Each of the two pairs will compete on Saturday in the white flight doubles bracket at 3 p.m.
