Two Redhawks are among the top 20 after round one of the ASU Thunderbird Invite, played Friday at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.

Both Will Holdridge (Lynden, Wash.) and David Torres (Armenia, Colombia) shot even-par 71 to open the tournament, tying at 16th. Holdridge held steady the entire round, taking par on all but three holes. After a birdie on his fifth hole, he took a double bogey on his ninth to make the turn at one-over 38. A birdie on his 16th hole, however, put him back at even-par on the day.

Torrres parred 12 holes, tabbing two bogeys and one birdie on his first nine and reversing the sequence on the second. His score of even-par 71 was the second-lowest individual round of his collegiate career and lowest since October 26, 2012.

The other three SU players competing at the tournament finished within four strokes of each other. Rob Seibly (Spokane, Wash.) led this pack after shooting 6-over-par 77 during Friday’s first round, tying at 74th. Colter Morton (Pocatello, Idaho) was two strokes behind Seibly, carding an 8-over 79 Friday.  Morton finished the round tied for 88th, six spots above Jordan Beals (Enumclaw, Wash.), who took 80 strokes on the day, nine shots above par.

As a team, the Redhawks counted 298 strokes on the day, 14 strokes above par. New Mexico has the tournament lead at 8-under 276, while Oregon State’s Nick Chianello has the individual lead at 7-under-par 64.

Seattle U will begin the second round of the tournament Saturday, April 6. The first Redhawk to tee off with be Beals at 7:50 a.m. off the No. 10 tee.
