After claiming points in all three rounds of the Cypress Ridge Match Play March 28-29, Rob Seibly (Spokane, Wash.) has been named Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week by the conference office Tuesday in Denver, Colo.
Seibly earned 2.5 points in three matches last week, winning matches in the quarter- and semifinal rounds and halving a match in the championship round. In the quarterfinals, he defeated host Cal Poly’s Grant Martens 3&2, needing only 16 holes to post the victory. Against Cal Poly’s second team in the tournament during the semifinal round, Seibly posted an even bigger win, taking down Alex Romo 5&4 in just 14 holes. In the championship round, Seibly earned a half-point by halving the match with CSU Bakersfield’s Chase Goodvin. Seibly played as the Redhawks’ top golfer in all three matches, teeing off last and facing the opponent’s best player.
Thanks in part to Seibly’s efforts, the Redhawks advanced to the championship match of the tournament for the second straight year. Unlike in 2012, however, SU lost in the final match to CSU Bakersfield, 3.5-1.5.
“Rob is a great leader and hard worker; it was great to see him finally play the golf we know he is capable of,” said Seattle University men’s golf head coach Marc Chandonnet. “I am excited to see him finish off the year and contend for a WAC championship.”
Seibly and the rest of the Redhawks’ men’s golf team will next hit the links Friday, April 5 at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Ariz. That tournament will be the final tune-up for the WAC Championship held at the end of the month.
