The Seattle University volleyball team lost to the University of Idaho, 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 12-25, 25-19), Saturday night in a Western Athletic Conference match at Memorial Gym.
Sarah Jaeckel (Littleton, Colo.) and Kaytlyn Dill (Bothell, Wash.) finished with 15 kills apiece, with Allison Farley (Happy Valley, Ore.) contributing nine kills and a .533 hitting percentage and Karina Miastkowska (Northbrook, Ill.) earning seven kills. Jacquie Brice (Fullerton, Calif.) notched her sixth double-double of the season, including her second against Idaho, with 35 assists and 17 digs, and Lani Beadle (Seattle, Wash.) finished with 21 digs and eight assists.
Idaho (12-13, 10-5 WAC) jumped on top in the first set, 8-2, led by three total blocks by Julia Church. The Vandals would extend their lead to 15-4 with six unanswered points, but two kills apiece from Jaeckel and Dill would allow Seattle U to respond with a 5-1 scoring run. The two teams would exchange points the rest of the first set, with Ashley Christman closing it out with a kill for Idaho.
The Vandals scored seven straight points to open an 8-1 lead in the second set, starting with two kills by Allison Baker and concluding with a solo block and a kill by Alyssa Schultz. The Redhawks responded with five straight points to close their deficit to 9-7, and then a service ace by Brice tied the second set at 11-11. Idaho would close out the set by outscoring Seattle U, 12-4, with Alex Sele finishing off the second set with a kill.
Seattle U scored the first nine points of the third set, with Farley earning three kills and Miastkowska collecting two kills during that stretch. Idaho would not come any closer than seven points behind as the Redhawks finished off the set on a 9-3 scoring run, punctuated by a solo block from Kelly Biette (Brighton, Colo). Seattle U hit .500 in the third set with 16 kills and only one attack error in 30 attempts.
Back-to-back kills by Schultz gave Idaho a 6-2 lead in the fourth set before Seattle U went on a 7-2 scoring run to pull ahead, 9-8. A block by Church and Schultz followed by a service ace from Janelle Chow pulled the Vandals ahead, 13-10, but the Redhawks kept fighting, closing their deficit to one point three different times. Idaho closed out the set and the match on a 9-4 scoring run, with Baker earning the Vandals' final two points on kills.
Baker notched a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs, plus she hit .390 in the match, while Schultz finished with seven kills and nine total blocks. Jenny Feicht collected 23 assists and seven digs, Ryann Carter contributed 17 assists, and Chow earned two service aces and a team-high 18 defensive digs.
Seattle University (7-18, 2-13 WAC) returns home for the final two home matches of the season, first facing UT Arlington Thursday, Nov. 8, starting at 7 p.m. before welcoming Louisiana Tech to the Connolly Center for Senior Night Saturday, Nov. 10, also starting at 7 p.m.
