After playing Washington even in the first half, the Seattle University men's soccer team gave up a goal 10 seconds into the second half, and the Huskies added an insurance goal later in the match to solidify a 2-0 victory over the Redhawks Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Field.
Washington (5-3-1) had a flurry of scoring chances early in the first half, but Seattle U goalie Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) was up to the task, making saves on shots by Quinton Beasley and Nate Sackeyfio. Both teams had chances scattered throughout the half, but both defenses kept the match scoreless heading into halftime.
Right at the start of the second half, Ben Fisk stole the ball from the Redhawks and fed Abdul Aman, who blasted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past Haworth to put the Huskies on top, 1-0. Later in the half, the Huskies drew a foul and Dylan Tucker-Gangnes blasted a free kick into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season.
"I liked our first half, but that early goal in the second half put us in a tough spot. We learned today that when you make a mistake, you get punished. We got caught on the second goal with the quick restart," Seattle U head coach Peter Fewing said. "We tried to play with them today, and we created some good opportunities for ourselves. We are just trying to get better each week, but today we learned two valuable lessons."
Washington outshot Seattle U, 18-9, with three Huskies (Beasley, Fisk, James Moberg) earning three shots apiece for the Huskies. Miguel Gonzalez (Yelm, Wash.), Brady Ballew (Marysville, Wash.), and Marshall Kosaka (Burien, Wash.) led the Redhawks with two goals each. Haworth finished with four saves for Seattle U, while Spencer Richey was credited with one save to earn the shutout.
Seattle University (2-5) will begin Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play next Sunday, Sept. 30, against the San Jose State Spartans starting at 1 p.m. at Championship Field.
