The Seattle University women's tennis team advanced to the finals of the Great West Conference Championships Saturday, sweeping host Texas-Pan American 4-0 at the HEB Tennis Center in Harlingen, Texas.

Seattle U's win was bolstered by a strong performance from Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.), who swept her UTPA foe Cindy Sands. Weissmann came out strong with a first set of 6-0 and repeated the result in the second for a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number four singles and the Redhawks' third point of the match.

The Redhawks clinched the first-to-four match at number six singles, where Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) took on UTPA's Blanca Garcia Izaguirre. Lucas took the first set 6-2 and followed up with a 6-1 second set for SU's fourth and clinching point of the match.

Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) also claimed a point for Seattle U, taking down Dana Nazarova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 at number two singles.

The Redhawks opened the match by winning the doubles point. Newman and Nicole Nakaoka (Honolulu, Hawaii) started off the doubles competition with an 8-2 win at number three singles over UTPA's Sands and Izaguirre. Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) and Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) fell 8-5 at number one doubles next, tying the doubles competition with Weissmann and Lucas playing the Broncs' Nazarova and Wanda Beguelin. The SU duo pulled off the victory at second doubles position, winning 8-4.

Three singles matches were left unfinished after Lucas' clinching point. At number one singles, Schwab was tied with Malin Anderson at one set a piece, as was Wurden at number five singles. Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) was down one set to nothing, but tied at 4-4 in the second at the time her match ended.

Seattle U (13-13) will face the New Jersey Institute of Technology for the conference title Sunday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m. PST. UTPA moves onto the third place match against Chicago State at 7:00 a.m. PST, while CSU Bakersfield and North Dakota square off in the fifth place match, also at 7:00 a.m. All matches will take place at the HEB Tennis Center in Harlingen, Texas.
