Junior Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) was named Great West Player of the Week Friday after going undefeated in singles play during the Redhawks' spring break matches last week.
Newman compiled a perfect 4-0 individual record last week. She started the week off with two three-set victories over opponents from Southern Utah and Drake, then beat conference foe North Dakota's Stephanie Biehn 6-4, 6-1 at number two singles March 22. Against Idaho State a day later, Newman moved up to the first singles position for the first time in her career and ended the week with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win over the Bengal's Katharina Marsela.
Newman also claimed two doubles victories last week, an 8-0 win over Southern Utah's Johnson/Pleskan duo with teammate Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.), and an 8-1 win over Idaho State's team of Moorhead and Tangarife with help from Nicole Nakaoka (Honolulu, Hawaii). Newman's six wins last week helped the Redhawks claim a 3-1 team record over the break.
On the year, Newman has tallied a 16-6 individual record, including a stretch of seven straight singles victories from Jan. 28 to Feb. 10.
Newman and the rest of the women's tennis team next take the court Saturday, April 7 with a 7:00 p.m. home contest versus Portland State. The match will take place at the Sammamish Club in Issaquah, Wash.
